What will I do?
As a Research Engineer – Data Science, you will play a pivotal role in the Digital & Robotics team within the Research & Technical Capabilities directorate. Your responsibilities will involve developing innovative data and digital systems for renewable energy applications, leveraging AI, machine learning, cloud computing (Azure/AWS), and digital twin development to advance offshore renewable energy. You will implement APIs, data visualisation, and GUIs to drive the digitisation of the sector. Collaborating with experts, you will contribute to building frameworks for offshore wind farm digital twins, while also engaging in R&D activities, consultancies, and project work within ORE CATAPULT. Additionally, you will promote ORE CATAPULT’s brand by delivering high-quality technical reports and presentations. Your role will also require working closely with universities, research institutions, and industry stakeholders to advance drivetrain monitoring and diagnostic technologies. You will support the Blyth Technology Demonstration Centre, contributing to the development of cutting-edge technology solutions for the offshore renewables sector.
What are we looking for?
To succeed in this role, we are looking for someone who has:
- A Masters or PhD in Data Science, Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.

Experience in digital services, especially using AI/ML and cloud platforms like Azure and AWS for data processing.
- A strong understanding of renewable energy devices and the ability to process data from offshore applications.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, and other relevant programming languages, along with good coding practices (e.g., version control with Git).
- The ability to visualise data and project outputs clearly.
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with experience working with senior management and stakeholders.
Bonus Skills:
- Knowledge of wind turbine components and experience with renewable energy device analysis and design.

This role can be based at any of our ORE Catapult locations across the UK. This means you have the flexibility to choose the work environment and location that suits you best. A full list of our sites can be found here. Please note that travel to our Blyth site where the team is based would be required regularly.
