This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Salary: $68,405.00 Per Year (Step 1) to $88,926.00 Per Year (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. MAJOR DUTIES: As a Geophysicist within the Geology, Energy, and Mineral Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Utilize existing, in-house and commercial software to process and analyze geophysical data to extract subsurface information. Assist in the development of realistic and reasonable geological models of areas of investigation based on geophysical data, drill core analyses, and other available information. Apply established procedures and existing computer programs for quality assurance and quality control of geophysical data. Prepare illustrative material for talks and reports, authors and co-authors report on results of investigations. Perform library scientific literature research. Assist in the acquisition of geophysical field and laboratory data. Operate a motor vehicle including 4 -wheeling over difficult terrain. Physical Demands Field work may require hiking distances of several kilometers over uneven surfaces, the use of proper personal protective gear, working in dusty, hot, humid, and extreme cold environments, occasional off-road driving of 4-wheel drive vehicles, traveling to remote field sites in helicopters or small fixed wing planes, and/or boats. Lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 20 kilograms may be necessary. Work Environment Most work takes place in office or laboratory settings with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as exposure to extreme temperature, noxious or toxic gasses, ice or flooding.
