*We are recruiting to fill this position at either the Environmental Engineer 2 or 3 level. The selected candidate will be hired into the appropriate job class based on their qualifications.
Salary: Depending on which level you are hired at, the monthly salary will be as follows: Environmental Engineer 2: $5,783 - $7,779. Environmental Engineer 3: $6,705 - $ 9,021

Provide comprehensive engineering support and expertise for aquatic habitat restoration projects, including fish passage, bank protection, and fish screening.
In this role, envision yourself collaborating with restoration professionals, preparing and approving final engineering designs and permit projects, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of engineering work.
What to Expect-
Depending on the qualifications, expectations of the position’s duties and level of supervision may vary. Typical work may include one (1) or more of the following:
Technical Assistance:
- Serve as a representative on technical matters related to the planning, and/or review of proposals/designs and existing environmental permits at the county, state, and federal levels, specifically for projects impacting fish and wildlife.
- Specialize in reviews, negotiations and recommendations for approval or disapproval of plans, proposals, and designs for bank protection, fish habitat enhancement and restoration, stormwater, flood hazard reduction, and/or mitigation for various instream projects submitted.
- Provide liaison with other agency personnel, state and federal agencies, tribes, local governments and the public to resolve complex engineering issues.
Project Design:
- Develop complex projects for habitat restoration, fish passage, and bank protection projects. Prepares detailed engineering calculations for hydrologic, hydraulic and structural analysis for the design and construction of fish passage, habitat restoration, bank protection, and flood hazard reduction projects.
- Perform design calculations for fish passage analysis, geomorphology, stream hydrology, open channel flow and backwater hydraulics, placement of wood in streams, estuarine and nearshore hydraulics, structural analysis and sediment transport.
Training and Documents:
- In collaboration with established PE’s and subject matter experts, research, write, and develop aquatic habitat guidelines for the design of fish passage, bank protection, stream restoration, marine shoreline protection, screening and habitat restoration, flood hazard management, and other instream and nearshore activities and techniques.
Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards: Approximately 70% office work and 30% field work. Much of the field work includes hiking and wading streams in rough weather conditions. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
Schedule (i.e., hours and days): Specific schedule is negotiable. Will work weekdays, 40 hours per week. Hours often exceed the standard 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. workday.
Travel Requirements: Travel throughout the state to evaluate site conditions and attend meetings is required. Periods of overnight travel will be required.
Customer Interactions: Interacts with tribes, federal, state and local governments, politicians, engineers, biologists, scientists, restoration groups and the public are frequently required.

Required Qualifications:
To be considered for an Environmental Engineer 2:
Bachelor's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resource, environmental or related field OR an Engineer-In-Training Certificate.
AND
Two (2) years of environmental engineering experience.
OR
A Master's degree with major study in one (1) of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, or related field.
AND
One (1) year of experience in environmental engineering.
To be considered for an Environmental Engineer 3:
Bachelor's degree with a major study in one (1) of the following engineering fields: sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resource, environmental or related field OR an Engineer-In-Training Certificate.
AND
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington.
AND
Three (3) years of environmental engineering experience.
OR
A Master's degree with major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, or related field.
AND
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington.
AND
Two (2) years of experience in environmental engineering.
An Environmental Engineer 2 and Environmental 3 must also have:
Certifications/Licenses:
Valid Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
Experience:
- Additional relevant education and experience pertaining to habitat restoration, fish passage, fish screening, bank protection, geomorphology, civil engineering design, AutoCAD Civil 3D drafting, surveying, construction inspection, project management, and permitting.
- Developing and implementing training and presentations.
Knowledge of:
- Fish and wildlife habitats and including life history needs and requirements.
- Environmental permitting and regulatory processes.
- Construction related impacts to aquatic and riparian habitats, best management practices and mitigation measures.
Ability to:
- Prepare and interpret engineering plans, reports, specifications and contract documents.
