Master Thesis - Gauge speech intelligibility in various acoustic environments
Job Description
Category: DSP or Acoustic
Scope: 2 students completing 30 credits (20 weeks) each.
Background
Axis Communications has a growing number of products which includes paging systems. The loudspeakers are installed in many environments including outdoors and in large halls. This means that security announcements need to be heard and understood in a variety of conditions. There are many methods to measure and gauge speech intelligibility for public address equipment. The goal of this master thesis is to research which methods exist and determine which is the best fit for Axis’s needs.
Goal
- Catalog and evaluate the various speech intelligibility methods considering that background noise and wind will mask and degrade the loudspeaker’s address signal.
- Develop an objective evaluation methodology using standardized metrics.
- Gather user feedback to capture the human experience of intelligibility.
- Summarize these and use them to specify design aspects that should be emphasized in our future products.
- Create prototypes implementing suggested design changes and validate their effectiveness.
