Job Summary:
Working closely with the development staff and senior leadership, this person will be responsible for developing strategies to secure major gifts of $25,000+. This fundraising professional will help donors accomplish their philanthropic goals by providing them with major giving opportunities that align with the Zoo’s funding priorities.
The Manager of Major Gifts is responsible for performing the job functions consistent with the mission and values of Saint Louis Zoo and the Development Department. The Manager of Major Gifts will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Essential Functions:
- Qualify a portfolio of approximately 150 individual donors for solicitation of major gifts of $25,000 and above.
- Create individual goals for each person in the portfolio based on the donor’s interests and history of giving.
- Advance prospect and donor relationships through an integrated moves management process, including tours, meetings, and Zoo-sponsored events (a few occur during evening hours and weekends).
- Secure appropriate project/program information (including budgets) to create effective proposals and solicitations.
- Create monthly reports that accurately reflect portfolio activity and performance.
- Perform other major donor activities as required by management.

Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the Zoo’s discretion. Tasks and duties are primarily performed in an office setting. Some donor engagement activities may require being outdoors. Employees may be exposed to various outdoor elements, including extreme temperatures, precipitation, and potential hazards. The Zoo provides appropriate safety equipment and training to ensure employee well-being during outdoor activities
