Analyst/Engineer, Carbon Inventory and Compliance (Contract - 18 months)

West Fraser is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Climate Engineer on an 18-month contract. Our climate team currently have an opportunity for a motivated engineer or an analyst.
As a member of the Environment & Sustainability team, the Analyst/Engineer, Carbon Inventory and Compliance, will collaborate with various departments and gain valuable experience in climate change regulations across Canada, the US, the UK, and the EU, as well as a variety of GHG accounting standards. Additionally, the role will provide exposure to Environmental and Sustainability Governance (ESG) reporting, CDP reporting, and Life Cycle Assessments within the forestry sector.
You'll Do:
- Collaborate with various departments within and outside of West Fraser to collect GHG-related data and prepare West Fraser’s Greenhouse Gas(GHG) inventory. This includes using statistical techniques to identify data outliers, conducting Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC), quantifying emissions according to relevant provincial and federal protocols, and verifying them with third-party verifiers.
- Contribute to the development and updates of the GHG Inventory Management Plan.
- Participate in the annual CDP climate change data collection, reporting, and scoring review.
- Stay informed on policy and regulatory developments related to climate change and carbon emissions and contribute to navigating emerging requirements
- Support environmental innovation and technology development in emissions accounting, reporting, and inventory management software solutions.
- Assist in managing provincial cap-and-trade program and environment surveys in Canada (e.g., TIER, BCOBPS, FPAC).
- Provide data insights to support value chain engagement and contribute to the development and implementation of the Scope 3 emission reduction strategy.
- Collaborate with energy engineers on identifying emission reduction projects and development initiatives focused on carbon reduction.
You'll Have:
- Recent graduate in a Sustainability-focused or Environmental or related Engineering degree or diploma program from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Experience in GHG quantification, verification, sustainability reporting, and regulatory reporting would be considered an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and knowledge of Power BI, Sustainability software, and of the GHG protocol.
- Understanding of climate change regulations, cap and trade system, and carbon policy.
Other:
- A strong work ethic and commitment to safety in the workplace.
- Must be available to start in January/February 2025.
- Has a class 5 driver’s license.
Compensation Package:
- The salary range for this position may vary depending on experience, education, and location. The yearly salary range is between $74,000 to $87,900.
