Role Purpose
Wood Mackenzie Power and Renewables provides a one-stop integrated subscription, analysis and advisory service for companies in the energy and related sectors, enabling our clients to make the best decisions within a constantly evolving global energy industry.
We are looking for an Australia Power & Renewables Director of Research and Consulting to lead our dynamic and expanding team in Sydney. The successful candidate will be responsible for power market analysis, modelling updates, client engagement and business development for the Australia market. He or she will work with a team of analysts to use cutting-edge power dispatch models, track and update power market data, and deliver high-impact and original research and advisory services to clients.
Joining a team of global power and renewables experts, you will take on a key leadership role in our power research and advisory in Asia Pacific, responsible for our Australia coverage. You will incorporate latest market trends and data in regional power models, develop technology and power price outlooks, coordinate with experts and stakeholders to optimise forecasts, and pro-actively explore new content areas to help our clients navigate the energy transition. You will be the go-to person for the Australian power market and outlook in areas including power price forecasts, technology costs and LCOE, capacity outlooks, power asset valuation, and have strong expertise managing a team.
Leading a team of Australia-based analysts, and working with the wider APAC and global power and renewables teams, you will be responsible for preparing high-quality, insightful reports, publications and presentations to influence clients’ business decisions. Through research trips, client interactions and industry events you will play a leadership role building and maintaining relationships with a range of clients and other experts in the power & renewables industry. You will stay informed on key market trends and implement the latest ideas into power modelling and research reports. You will be responsible for both the research and consulting offerings in Australia, delivering both standardised and bespoke studies for clients.

Main Responsibilities
Business development
Support business development activities in Australia including development of market research and consulting offerings, client engagement and pitching
Be responsible for clients in Australia with direct ownership for the development of the relationship and developing research and consulting opportunities
Work with the regional and global Power & Renewables team to develop new high-impact research and thought leadership for Australian, Asia Pacific and global clients
Project management
Effective project planning – define course of action to accomplish required goals – ensure all stakeholders are aligned
Balance requirements between research and consulting offerings to ensure deliverables for both are met on a timely basis
Secure resources required for project, ensure resources are being utilised effectively
Track progress against project plan
Demonstrate the ability to plan and prioritise own work-load to ensure project objectives and targets are met
Ability to oversee contribution of others (consultants, researchers, subcontractors and associates) to ensure high quality deliverables, completed on time and within budget
Review and close off project internally (project review, participant feedback etc.)
Identify follow-up and on-sale opportunities
Analysis
Supporting and coaching project team members on input into a range of deliverables, including operation of sophisticated internal power dispatch models and developing new thought leadership content for our Australia practice
Contributing towards the content and format of presentations and reports
Extracting and analysing data from internal and external sources such as databases, websites, industry interviews and Wood Mackenzie products
Demonstrate high standards of professionalism and attention to detail to ensure the highest quality analysis is delivered
Willingness to take ownership for analysis undertaken, and ability to defend work to clients in a coherent, credible and authoritative manner
Communication
Effective and timely communication with clients, informing them of progress at all times
Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills, both internally and externally

About You
The role is ideal for an experienced professional who has a high aptitude for team management, thought leadership, business development, quantitative analysis and modelling, is passionate about understanding the big picture trends in the energy industry, and looking to develop as a key thought leader in the Australia power and renewables market. The successful candidate will be expected to have the following qualities, qualifications and experience:
Direct experience within the power & renewables industry or in a related consulting environment with demonstrated experience in team management, business development and project management
Preferably with at least 7-10 years of related working experience
A strong understanding of the Australian power and renewables sector, renewables technologies, business models and strategies
Analytical skills including but not limited to
Power market modelling (using tools such as Plexos/Aurora etc)
Financial modelling
Proven experience of leading a team is essential
Strong Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills
Personal time management skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong writing and presentation skills
Project management
Financial experience is not essential but would be beneficial
