Position Overview
The Associate, Renewable Portfolio Settlements will report to the Director, Renewable Portfolio Settlements and is responsible for settling physical and financial energy commodity transactions for various owned and third-party wind, solar and energy storage projects across North American markets. The role involves identifying pricing and production data issues and communicating and resolving data disputes with trading counterparties, RTOs/ISOs, and internal stakeholders. The role requires detailed analysis of electricity generation and trade data through the use of Allegro and Adapt2 software programs and the ability to understand Power Purchase Agreements and pricing formulas. Periodic regulatory reporting is also required. It is essential for the Associate to exercise good business judgment and to make prudent business decisions for timely dispute resolution.
Responsibilities
- Using their knowledge of the renewable energy industry and the North American markets, identify and resolve differences and disputes between anticipated and realized settlement values.
- Validate power generation and pricing data using internal and external sources. Data systems include Allegro, Adapt2, PI, SCADA, and Power BI.
- Send daily power meter data validations to counterparties while adhering to market deadlines.
- Create and maintain Excel templates with validated power generation and price detail for energy or REC customers in accordance with contractual provisions.
- Ensure invoices are validated and internally distributed in time to meet all payment deadlines.
- Navigate regional grid website portals to obtain settlement files and pricing data to reconcile invoices.
- Perform analytical research to determine cause of settlement discrepancies.
- Monitor commodity transactions for weekly and monthly counterparty settlements, to ensure they are captured in the transaction management system correctly.
- Prepare and submit, on secure agency websites, quarterly regulatory reports to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for all assigned renewable projects
- Assist other departments with financial and market analysis for the company’s fleet of renewable projects, as requested.
- Assist with onboarding of new renewable projects in the development stage.
- Serve as subject matter expert in assigned market region and collaborate inter-departmentally to trouble-shoot production or onboarding steps
- Mentor junior team members on navigating market nuances and procedures
- Identify process improvements and automation opportunities to improve invoice production timeliness and achieve other efficiencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in an analytical field such as economics, finance, accounting, renewable energy and sustainability or similar field.
- Track record of being able to work reliably under tight timelines, experience training junior team members and propose, design and implement process improvements.
- In-depth understanding of energy commodity markets and regional power/independent system operators (e.g. PJM, ERCOT, NYISO, MISO, SPP, ISO-NE, etc.) with at least two areas of strong subject matter expertise
- Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills and good attention to detail with the ability to organize and analyze large quantities of data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel. Must be able to exhibit solid understanding of Excel formulas and pivot tables.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete settlement responsibilities in accordance with internal and external deadlines.
- Familiarity with energy trading and risk management software (e.g. Allegro) desired.
- Experience Power Purchase Agreements preferred.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal oversight as well as in a team setting.
- Exhibit effective written and oral communication skills, including email, Skype and Microsoft Teams video conferencing, phone, and in-person communications.
- Must be a self-starting and motivated team player who is able to efficiently become skilled at new systems and effectively manage deadlines.
