Our client is seeking an experienced and highly capable HR/IR Officer to join their organisation. The successful candidate will have extensive experience working within a unionised environment, with a strong focus on Industrial Relations, CCMA representation and employee relations. This is a hands-on position suited to an HR/IR professional who is confident dealing with employees, trade unions, management and external bodies, and who has substantial experience representing companies at the CCMA. CCMA experience is a critical requirement for this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Industrial Relations / Employee Relations
1. Represent the company at the CCMA, including conciliations, arbitrations and related proceedings.
2. Prepare and manage CCMA cases, including documentation, evidence and case preparation.
3. Provide advice and guidance to management on labour and employee-relations matters.
4. Manage disciplinary hearings, grievances and incapacity processes.
5. Ensure compliance with company policies and South African labour legislation.
6. Investigate employee complaints, disputes and misconduct allegations.
7. Maintain effective relationships with employees and trade union representatives.
8. Engage with organised labour on workplace matters.
9. Represent the company during wage negotiations and collective bargaining processes.
10. Assist with the implementation and interpretation of collective agreements.
Human Resources
1. Manage the recruitment process, including:
2. Job specifications and advertising
3. Screening and shortlisting
4. Interviews
5. Reference checks
6. Onboarding and induction
7. Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records.
8. Provide HR support and advice to employees and management.
9. Assist with performance management processes.
10. Manage employee attendance, leave and related HR administration.
11. Assist with training and development initiatives.
12. Support employee engagement and retention initiatives.
13. Assist with succession planning and workforce planning where required.
Compliance & Reporting
1. Prepare and submit annual HR/IR reports, both internally and to relevant external bodies.
2. Ensure statutory HR and labour-related reporting is completed accurately and on time.
3. Maintain compliance with applicable labour legislation and company policies.
4. Maintain accurate HR/IR documentation and records.
5. Monitor and report on employee-relations trends and key HR metrics.
IOD / COIDA
1. Register and manage Injury on Duty (IOD) claims.
2. Ensure all required documentation is completed and submitted.
3. Liaise with relevant stakeholders regarding IOD/COIDA claims.
4. Monitor claims through to resolution and maintain appropriate records.
General HR/IR Responsibilities
1. Assist management with HR and labour-related decision-making.
2. Develop and maintain effective HR and IR policies and procedures.
3. Assist with organisational restructuring and related employee consultation processes.
4. Support retrenchment and restructuring processes where required.
5. Conduct HR/IR investigations and provide recommendations to management.
6. Identify potential labour risks and recommend appropriate corrective action.
7. Promote positive employee relations and a productive workplace environment.
8. Keep abreast of changes to South African labour legislation and case law.
9. Perform other HR/IR duties and projects as required.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Relevant HR/IR qualification (Degree, Diploma or equivalent).
2. Minimum 10 years' experience in Human Resources / Industrial Relations.
3. 7–8 years' proven experience representing companies at the CCMA – this is an essential requirement.
4. Strong experience working in a unionised environment.
5. Proven experience with collective bargaining and wage negotiations.
6. Sound knowledge of South African labour legislation, including:

10. Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
11. Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA)
12. Excellent knowledge of disciplinary and grievance procedures.
13. Strong negotiation, conflict-resolution and employee-relations skills.
14. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
15. Valid driver's licence and own reliable vehicle – essential.
16. Willingness to travel when required.
