DescriptionChief Executive Officer
Residential & Commercial Solar
Affordable Solar · Powering New Mexico since 1998
Affordable Solar is seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead our residential and commercial solar business. This is a hands-on executive role with a primary responsibility of delivering on our mission of building trust in the energy transition by delivering the best possible customer experience. The right person will have accountability for the profit and loss, the team's engagement, the customer experience, and the standard of work that has carried this company's name in New Mexico since 1998.
The business is stable, experienced, and well positioned. We have an installed base of residential and commercial systems across the state, long-standing relationships with the utilities and jurisdictions we work in, and a team that knows how to build. The business has been deliberately right sized and run conservatively through a shifting incentive landscape.
We are looking for the next leader who will run it well and keep making it better — tightening the operation, taking care of customers, developing the team, and pursuing growth.
A customer centric leader. Someone who believes in our mission of delivering the best possible customer experience. We believe our reputation is our most valuable asset, and we need a leader who drives a team to deliver a customer experience that holds up years after the install.
An experienced operator. Someone who has the experience to operate independently. We enjoy nurturing talent, but this position is for someone with the ability to drive results without daily feedback from the shareholders.
A creative problem solver. A changing incentive landscape means a business that needs new ideas and solutions, using our mission as the framework for solving problems.
A leader people stay for. Every person matters. We want someone who develops people, communicates directly, and creates a place people want to work. Engaged coworkers will drive a better customer experience.
Customer experience
- Maintain an excellent customer experience, measured through a net promoter score greater than 40.
- Maintain Google reviews greater than 4.5 out of 5.
Business leadership and financial performance
- Profit and loss responsibility.
- Build the annual operating plan and budget, and manage the business to it month over month.
- Report performance, risks, and recommendations to ownership through monthly shareholder meetings.
Sales
- Lead the sales team across residential and commercial — pipeline, close rate, quality of the sale, and accuracy of what we promise the customer.
- Carry the commercial and distributed-generation pipeline, where the sale is longer, the decision-maker is a business or property owner, and the economics have to stand up to real scrutiny.
- Maintain a steady, cost-effective flow of qualified leads through referrals, past customers, community presence, and the channels that already work for us.
- Protect the Affordable Solar name in every sales conversation. We sell on trust and longevity, not pressure.
Operations and project delivery
- Own the full project lifecycle from signed contract through permission to operate, invoicing, and closeout.
- Improve cycle time and predictability across design, permitting, utility interconnection, installation, inspection, and closeout.
- Own purchasing, inventory, warehouse, and equipment sourcing, including tax-credit and domestic-content sourcing compliance.
- Manage the added complexity commercial work brings — three-phase service, larger interconnections, general contractor and subcontractor coordination, and prevailing-wage and apprenticeship requirements where they apply.
- Hold quality and safety standards across every crew and every install.
Service and the installed base
- Run the service program well across both residential and commercial systems — responsive, fair, and profitable — including warranty administration, monitoring, and paid service work.
- Take care of the customers we already have. Retention, referrals, upgrades, and storage retrofits are the most reliable growth we have.
Systems and continuous improvement
- Complete and own the rollout of our internal operating platform, which consolidates sales, operations, inventory, service, and accounting workflow.
- Steadily remove manual and administrative work from the business so a lean team can carry more volume without more overhead.
People and culture
- Lead, develop, and hold accountable a team spanning sales, project management, field installation, service, and administration.
- Set the tone: direct communication, ownership of the work, and doing right by the customer.
- Build the bench so the business does not depend on any one person, including you.
Compliance and risk
- Maintain licensing, insurance, bonding, contractor compliance, and safety programs.
- Own contracting standards, warranty exposure, and consumer-protection compliance for both residential and commercial agreements.
Reliable. You do what you said you would do, on the timeline you said you would do it. Your team and your customers can count on that.
Close to the work. You can sit with a homeowner or a building owner, walk a roof, read a P&L, and run a Monday production meeting in the same day.
Disciplined. You manage to the numbers without losing sight of the people and the customers behind them.
Direct. You raise problems early, tell ownership the truth, and expect the same back.
Improvement-minded. You would rather fix the process once than manage the exception every week. You look for the next ten percent, not the next reinvention.
Grounded in the community. This is a New Mexico company that has built its reputation one customer at a time. You understand that a business like this is earned locally and can be lost the same way.
What the First Year Looks Like
- First 90 days: learn the business — the numbers, the team, the customers, the installed base, the critical KPIs.
- By six months: running the business day to day without escalation, with clear standards, a working cadence, and the operating platform carrying the workflow.
- By twelve months: the business is hitting its plan, margins and cycle times have improved measurably, the team is stable, and you have an operating plan for the following year that ownership can support.
Affordable Solar has been building solar in New Mexico since 1998. We are one of the longest-standing solar contractors in the state, with a reputation earned across thousands of installations, deep utility and jurisdiction relationships, and an ownership group that has been in this industry a long time and is realistic about it.
This business sits inside a broader company that also develops, owns, and manages community solar projects, which means real infrastructure behind you — accounting, financing relationships, engineering, and a technology team — without the bureaucracy of a national player.
Competitive executive base salary with a performance-based incentive tied to the profit and loss, plus benefits. Stock and meaningful ownership opportunities are available. Specifics will be discussed during the interview process.
Qualifications
- 10+ years in residential or commercial solar, home improvement, specialty trade contracting, or a comparable installation-and-service business, with at least 5 years leading a business unit or company.
- Experience carrying both a residential and a commercial book of work, or a clear track record of learning a new customer segment quickly.
- Demonstrated profit-and-loss responsibility.
- A track record of steady, sustained performance.
- Comfort operating lean, close enough to the work to know what is actually happening in the field.
- Strong financial literacy: unit economics, gross margin by job, working capital, and cash.
- Working knowledge of solar or electrical construction, permitting, utility interconnection, and inspection processes, including three-phase and commercial-scale service; New Mexico and PNM territory experience is a significant advantage.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
