Under the supervision of the Environmental Permits Coordinator, the Environmental Compliance Specialist’s primary responsibility is to ensure the quality of applications for ministerial authorizations and other environmental permits, in particular by verifying the technical and environmental rigor of the required studies and deliverables. The specialist will assist in monitoring environmental management and sustainable development systems. The Senior Advisor will work a 5-2 schedule at our Montreal offices and in a hybrid work arrangement.
Tasks and responsibilities
• Ensure the quality and technical rigor of deliverables;
• Review, verify, and interpret technical environmental studies, then formulate recommendations;
• Manage projects, ensuring that deliverables are produced in accordance with Gold Fields’ quality standards and within deadlines;
• Support the preparation of applications for ministerial authorizations and other environmental permits as part of a multidisciplinary team;
• Ensure clear and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders;
• Collaborate on compiling permit requirements and conditions;
• Actively contribute to compliance with the environmental management system;
• Participate in developing training programs on environmental issues and best practices regarding environmental and regulatory matters;
• Perform any other related tasks necessary for the smooth operation of the department;
• Report any situation that could affect the occupational health and safety of staff or the physical integrity of the facilities;
• Comply at all times with health, safety, and environmental policies and rules.
Required Qualifications
• University degree in a relevant field (geology, geography, biology, mining engineering, environmental sciences);
• 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in environmental fields, including 5 years of experience specific to the mining sector.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
• Basic knowledge of geomatics (an asset).
• Bilingualism; will be required to work with English-speaking suppliers and consultants.
Technical Skills
• Knowledge and understanding of the Environment Quality Act, its related regulations (REAFIE, RAMHHS, RMD, etc.), Directive 019, and the Guide for Preparing Mine Site Reclamation and Restoration Plans in Quebec;
• Experience with and mastery of the ministerial authorization application process;
• Experience in the mining industry, particularly in mine water management, the geochemistry and geotechnics of mine tailings ponds, and mine site rehabilitation;
• Experience in project management and working within a multidisciplinary team;
