Renewable Energy Engineer (2IC to Head of Technical)
Role Overview
The Renewable Energy Engineer will act as second-in-command to the Head of Technical, supporting the full technical lifecycle across both operating assets and projects in development and construction.
The role combines technical design, commercial input, and project delivery support, with a strong focus on solar PV and BESS systems. The individual will play a key role in shaping technical solutions, running procurement processes, and supporting the preparation of competitive tender submissions.
This is a high-impact, cross-functional role interfacing with engineering, O&M, asset management, and commercial teams.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Engineering (Solar PV and BESS)
- Lead design and optimisation of utility-scale solar PV and BESS systems
- Develop system layouts, configurations, and technical specifications
- Conduct energy yield modelling and performance assessments
- Ensure designs meet industry standards, grid requirements, and project constraints
Costing & Commercial Input
- Develop detailed project cost estimates and technical budgets
- Provide input into financial models and project feasibility assessments
- Evaluate trade-offs between cost, performance, and reliability
Procurement & EPC Management
- Lead and manage RFP processes for EPC contractors, OEMs, and key suppliers
- Evaluate technical and commercial bids
- Support negotiation of EPC contracts and supplier agreements
- Ensure alignment with project timelines, budgets, and technical standards
Project Support (Development & Construction)
- Provide technical oversight on projects under construction
- Review engineering deliverables and contractor submissions
- Support issue resolution during construction and commissioning phases
- Ensure quality and technical compliance across all phases
Tendering & Technical Documentation
- Prepare technical sections of bids and tender submissions
- Develop high-quality technical reports, proposals, and presentations
- Support business development activities with technical expertise
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Work closely with O&M to ensure operability and maintainability of designs
- Interface with asset management on performance expectations and optimisation
- Collaborate with commercial teams on project structuring and execution
Minimum Requirements (Non-Negotiable)
- Engineering degree (Electrical preferred)
- Proven experience in solar PV and BESS design and costing
- Strong experience managing RFPs and supplier/EPC negotiations
- Utility-scale renewable energy project experience
- Strong technical writing skills for tender submissions and reports
Preferred Experience
- Background in technical consulting or engineering advisory
- 5-10+ years in renewable energy engineering or development
- Experience across both development and execution phases
- Familiarity with industry tools (e.g. PVSyst, Homer, AutoCAD, PVCase)
- Exposure to grid integration and interconnection requirements
