Critical Systems Technician II, Battery
Overview:
The Critical Systems Technician II, Battery is responsible for supporting the installation, startup, testing, certification, preventive maintenance, and service of battery systems associated with Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) infrastructure. This role assists in maintaining critical power reliability through battery maintenance, replacement projects, inspections, and system testing activities. Working with limited supervision, the technician supports customer sites, warehouse operations, and field service projects while adhering to strict safety and operational procedures within mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with battery replacements, upgrades, and new battery system installations
- Support startup, certification, and preventive maintenance activities for UPS battery systems
- Perform battery testing, inspections, and maintenance with minimal disruption to customer operations
- Assist with troubleshooting and routine maintenance of DC battery systems
- Support warehouse operations and inventory-related activities as needed
- Work from schematic diagrams, technical drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions
- Assist with disconnecting, connecting, and installing sealed battery systems in cabinets and open rack environments
- Build flooded-cell battery racks and spill containment systems
- Install flooded-cell battery systems within customer critical facility environments
- Collect, enter, and maintain installation and maintenance test data using company reporting systems
- Gather field service data and assist with maintenance reporting activities
- Assist field service teams across multiple service lines, including Switchgear, Critical Operations, and HVAC when required
General Responsibilities:
- Follow established operational, maintenance, and emergency Methods of Procedure (MOPs)
- Ensure strict compliance with critical facility safety requirements and work practices
- Maintain clean, organized, and professional job sites during service activities
- Interact professionally with internal teams and external customers
- Support multiple projects and service assignments simultaneously
- Travel approximately 50% or more to support customer locations and project requirements
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance
- Participate in training and technical development activities
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement
- Perform additional duties as assigned by Services Management
Required Skills:
- Basic knowledge of battery systems and critical power infrastructure
- Understanding of or ability to learn AC/DC electrical theory, electronic components, and electronic circuitry
- Ability to use hand tools and general maintenance equipment safely and effectively
- Ability to follow technical instructions, procedures, and safety requirements
- Understanding of battery string configurations, including series, parallel, and series-parallel connections
- Knowledge of torque specifications, torque-mark applications, and installation quality inspections
- Familiarity with electrical safety procedures and isolation methods
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
Desired Skills:
- Experience supporting UPS battery systems or critical power environments
- Familiarity with battery testing and maintenance procedures
- Experience working in data centers, mission-critical facilities, or industrial environments
- Knowledge of flooded-cell, VRLA, and other industrial battery technologies
- Ability to read electrical drawings and technical documentation
- Experience using battery testing and monitoring equipment
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Experience & Education:
- High School Diploma required
- Experience in electrical, battery, mechanical, or technical service environments preferred
- Knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems and battery technologies preferred
- Ability to learn critical power maintenance and installation procedures
- Training and experience with the following equipment preferred:
- Digital Multimeters
- Amp Clamps and Flexible CTs
- Alber Cellcorder Battery Testing Equipment
- Understanding of electrical isolation procedures, arc-flash safety, and proper PPE usage required
- OSHA 10-Hour Certification required
- NFPA 70E Safety Training required
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Ability to obtain a security clearance preferred
- Ability to travel approximately 50% or greater as project requirements dictate
- No supervisory responsibilities required for this position.
