Athea Laboratories, a leader in specialty chemical product manufacturing, is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager.
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving programs that protect employees’ health and safety, ensure regulatory compliance, and support a culture of operational excellence. This position serves as the site's primary safety leader and subject matter expert, providing strategic direction and oversight for occupational safety, environmental compliance, risk management, and emergency preparedness.
In addition to EHS responsibilities, the EHS Manager provides leadership and supervision over the individuals responsible for product compliance activities, ensuring products are developed, manufactured, labeled, and distributed in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements. The position collaborates closely with Operations, Quality, Research & Development, and senior leadership to maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, FDA, DOT, and other applicable regulations while supporting business objectives.
This position is based at Athea- Cornell, 1900 W. Cornell Street, withrequired local travel between facilities located in Milwaukee, WI.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain site safety programs, policies, procedures, and training.
- Monitor compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, state, and local EHS requirements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable FDA, EPA/FIFRA, state pesticide, chemical, transportation, and other product regulatory requirements.
- Review regulatory changes and assess business impacts; develop and implement compliance strategies.
- Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, and compliance assessments; track and drive corrective actions to completion.
- Lead hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident investigation activities.
- Manage regulatory inspections, agency inquiries, and external audits related to EHS or product compliance matters.
- Prepare and submit external regulatory reports (e.g., Form R, Tier II, etc.)
- Personnel management and supervision (candidate screening and interviewing, conducting personnel performance reviews, corrective action)
- Manage workers' compensation, injury prevention, return-to-work, and incident reporting programs.
- Serve as the site emergency coordinator and oversee emergency response planning, drills, and preparedness activities.
- Create and analyze EHS metrics and recommend improvements to reduce risk and improve safety outcomes.
- Coordinate environmental compliance activities, including hazardous waste management, stormwater, and chemical handling.
- Provide EHS guidance and support for facility projects, equipment installations, process changes, and new product introductions.
- Serve as a point of contact with vendors/contractors for EHS-related matters
Other Responsibilities:
- Inspection of emergency equipment
- Special projects as assigned
Qualifications & Skills:
- B.S degree in a scientific field is required
- 5+ years of experience overseeing EHS / regulatory compliance in a manufacturing environment, including at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- One or more relevant professional certifications preferred.
- Expert-level proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with enterprise resource planning software is required.
- Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred
