General Statement of Duties
Forsyth County's Department of Public Health is searching for a self-motivated individual with excellent organizational skills to fill an open Sr. Environmental Health Specialist position.
The Sr. Environmental Health Specialist position will assist in the following:
- Performing orientation and training activities for Environmental Health Specialist Interns, Environmental Health Specialists, Public Health Nurses, Student Nurses, and others.
- Implementing training plan(s) as devised by the Training Supervisor, and/or Program Supervisor.
- Creating training for all FLI staff regarding Food Code, Program Standards, Rules, Statutes, etc.
- Leading, Co-Leading core training team(s) for individuals working toward authorizations in food, lodging and institutions (FL & I), childcare, and tattoos.
- Standardizing field staff and/or providing standardizing practice to staff currently working on standardization.
This position must stay abreast of changes in technology and knowledge that relates to providing a safe environment for the public to enjoy. The changing world of Environmental Health necessitates that the Sr. Environmental Health Specialist spend a considerable length of time participating in various educational sessions, as well as professional organizations, and serving on committees of local and state levels. This position is required by law to obtain at least 15 hours annually of continuing education in the area of Environmental Health.
The workday for this position is Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Distinguishing Features
A qualified applicant should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the training and authorization of all new FLI interns.
Working knowledge of food sanitation, food-borne diseases, communicable diseases, protection of water supplies, solid waste management, and institutional sanitation.
Working knowledge of inspection methods and investigation techniques as applied in environmental health.
Ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations, records and reports.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to develop and express ideas and opinions concisely, comprehensively and clearly in oral and written form.
Ability to independently plan and schedule work activities.
Ability to apply environmental health knowledge and techniques in the investigation of environmental health problems.
Ability to exercise sound judgement and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing Public Health laws and regulations.
Considerable knowledge of environmental health laws, rules and procedures, as well as complete understanding of the concepts of public health law.
Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from a four-year college or university with 30 semester hours of course work in the physical or biological sciences OR a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Health from a program accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association and two years of experience at the Environmental Health Specialist level in a health department.
Registered as an Environmental Health Specialist (Sanitarian) by the NC State Board of Sanitarian Examiners.
Must have a valid NC driver's license.
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications of Candidates are as follows:
Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
Registered Environmental Health Specialist with 2 years of experience, and currently have FL & I, Childcare, and Tattoo Authorizations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Functions both within and outside of the health department as a consultant to other specialists and local officials, businesses, contractors, and developers on the more complex issues.
Analyzes the more complex problems and issues in assigned program area.
Develops and recommends alternate courses of action to other Environmental Health Specialists, various groups and businesses.
Explains, interprets, justifies and obtains compliance with various laws, regulations and standards.
Directs service activities in addition to performing in a limited supervisory capacity.
Assigns daily activities and schedules for assigned staff.
Recommends and provides ongoing training in the area of rules, regulations, evaluation procedures and proper debiting of violations in these establishments for Environmental Health Specialists.
Provides information to the public and provides training to clients regarding policies and regulations governing the issuance of permits.
Investigates complaints from the public, and may initiate corrective and/or legal action.
Prepares and maintains related records and reports.
Performs related work as required.
