General Description:
The Safety Manager is a key partner to plant and regional operations leadership, responsible for driving injury reduction, improving safety performance, and ensuring a safe working environment across assigned sites. This role leads the development and execution of ergonomics and safety initiatives, with a strong focus on data-driven decision-making, KPI ownership, and hands-on implementation of solutions in physically demanding industrial environments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Own and drive injury reduction strategies, with a primary focus on hourly workforce safety
- Establish, monitor, and improve key safety KPIs, including TRIR, DART, musculoskeletal injury rates, and near-miss reporting
- Conduct advanced ergonomic assessments targeting repetitive motion, lifting, and material handling risks
- Design and implement practical ergonomic solutions, including engineering controls, job rotation, workstation redesign, and tooling improvements
- Partner closely with Plant General Managers and operations teams to integrate safety into daily production activities
- Lead root cause analysis for injuries and ensure sustainable corrective actions are implemented
- Analyze injury and safety data trends to proactively identify high-risk areas
- Deliver targeted safety and ergonomics training to hourly employees and supervisors
- Conduct routine safety audits to ensure OSHA compliance and adherence to company standards
- Drive accountability at all levels for achieving and sustaining safety performance targets
- Act as a strategic partner to plant leadership, translating safety data into actionable operational improvements
- Collaborate with operations teams to build and track safety metrics that drive performance
- Provide analysis and recommendations for safety-related investments, including ergonomic improvements and equipment upgrades
- Identify trends and opportunities to reduce risk and improve overall site safety performance
- Serve as the safety subject matter expert for assigned sites, influencing decision-making and reinforcing a proactive safety culture
- Participate in site leadership meetings and contribute to overall operational performance discussions
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives that enhance both safety outcomes and productivity
Qualifications:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and act on safety data
- Demonstrated experience in ergonomics program development and implementation
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance requirements
- Experience managing safety performance through KPIs and metrics
- Ability to influence and collaborate effectively with operations and frontline teams
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and results-driven
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced industrial environment
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field preferred
- 5+ years of progressive safety leadership experience in manufacturing, recycling, or heavy industrial environments
- Proven track record of reducing workplace injuries, particularly within hourly labor environments
- Professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, or CPE strongly preferred
