About Assiniboine Park Conservancy

The Opportunity
We are seeking two (2) full-time, seasonal General Labourer's who will be employed with the Assiniboine Park Conservancy and participate in a paid 10-week internship across the Grounds, Horticulture and Animal Care departments. Under supervision, the Seasonal General Labourer will provide support and operational assistance to the various departments within APC.
Responsibilities
- Grounds
- Work with some power equipment and hand tools associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities.
- Operate small mowing and some turf maintenance equipment.
- Assist in turf maintenance, weed control, rake leaves, sweep sidewalks and pathways.
- Pick up garbage and debris throughout the park.
- Transport and distribute supplies for other departments.
- Provide assistance and support for all APC events as required.
- Horticulture
- Assist in the installation and care for plant material such as perennials, bedding plants, shrubs, bulbs, trees, lawns, etc. by watering, cultivating, staking, pruning/cutting, tilling, edging, and performing similar related activities.
- May assist with the unloading, delivery, and planting of floral and plant materials.
- Operate gardening equipment, till, fork and edge beds as required
- Remove debris and weeds from plant beds and surrounding areas.
- Animal Care
- Assist with daily animal husbandry and support zoo operations as directed.
- Clean exhibits and support maintenance in related Zoo areas as assigned.
- Perform exhibit maintenance tasks, including: grass mowing, pruning, leaf raking, watering flora, window cleaning, substrate maintenance, etc. within assigned habitats as directed.
- Record animal behaviour and health indicators as directed.
- Support in the preparation and creation of exhibit materials and public presentations.
- Inspect assigned enclosures for any hazards to animals, keepers and public.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a current High school or University Student from Churchill, Manitoba.
- Possessing a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License would be considered an asset.
- Some work experience performing general labour and operational experience would be considered an asset.
- Basic technology and computer skills.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Physically demanding and repetitive tasks.
- Must be able to perform physically strenuous work outdoors in all types of weather.
- Combination of sitting, standing, pushing, lifting, kneeling and walking for extended periods.
- Frequently handling heavy loads of up to 45-50 lbs.
- Must be able to push/pull 50-250 lbs.
- Noise exposure from operations, mechanical equipment and animal vocalizations.
- Exposure to strong scents from animals and chemical products.
- Contact with plants and animals which may cause allergic reactions.
