The Opportunity
The Assistant Curator, Landscape Stewardship is a leadership role within the Horticulture Department responsible for the long-term stewardship, ecological management, and operational oversight of naturalized and landscape stewardship areas across Assiniboine Park Conservancy's Park and Zoo campus. This position provides strategic and day-to-day leadership for forestry operations, implementation of the Forest Management Plan, ecological landscape maintenance, and monitoring of water body health throughout the property.
Working collaboratively with Conservation, Education & Programming, Horticulture, Zoo Operations, and Project Planning teams, the Assistant Curator supports both existing landscapes and future Development Plan projects as they are realized across the campus. The position plays a key role in advancing APC's living collections stewardship, plant records management, Indigenous engagement initiatives, ecological restoration efforts, and relationships within the public garden, conservation, and Indigenous communities through collaboration, accreditation, and professional leadership.
Through leadership of forestry operations, stewardship landscapes, and environmental systems, this role contributes directly to the ecological health, long-term sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and guest experience of the Park and Zoo, helping to position APC as a leader in public horticulture, environmental stewardship, and urban ecological management in Canada.
Required Experience, Education, and Training:
- Degree in Forestry, Arboriculture, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in natural lands management, forestry, arboretum management, botanical gardens, ecological restoration, or public garden operations.
- A minimum of five to seven (5–7) years of progressively responsible experience within public gardens, arboreta, zoological parks, or conservation-focused organizations, with an advanced understanding of horticultural practices, plant cultivation, living collections management, and the display and exhibition of diverse plant materials.
- Advanced understanding of urban forestry, ecological restoration, arboriculture, native plant communities, and biodiversity conservation.
- Demonstrated ability to balance conservation, ecological stewardship, and public engagement objectives within a complex public-facing environment.
- Knowledge of plant records systems, living collections management, GIS mapping, and collection databases, with the ability to leverage data to inform operational and strategic decision-making.
- Proven experience in respectful engagement with Indigenous communities and collaborative stewardship approaches.
- Demonstrated success in advancing partnerships that support Indigenous perspectives, cultural landscapes, and shared stewardship objectives.
- Strong organizational, communication, project management, and strategic planning skills, with the ability to develop collaborative partnerships and support engaging ecological interpretation, educational programming, and guest experience initiatives across teams, communities, and external organizations.
- Experience managing staff within a unionized environment, volunteers, contractors, and collaborative projects.
- Excellent proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Office software and a demonstrated aptitude for quickly learning new software programs.
- Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s license or equivalent.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
