WSP is hiring an Environmental GIS Planner with technical skills in GIS analysis, municipal stormwater management, and environmental policy and compliance services for our Herndon, Virginia office.
The ideal candidate will have intermediate to advanced experience using ESRI GIS platforms to analyze, visualize, and report data for municipal and industrial stormwater, water/wastewater, or environmental programs, and planning experience in municipal stormwater management and flood resilience planning. Experience in Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permits, Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), watershed planning, green infrastructure, stormwater monitoring, dry weather outfall screening, and associated report development is a plus.
Some travel/field work may be required typically less than 10% of the time per year (usually in the mid-Atlantic US)
Your Impact
GIS-focused activities can include:
Performing GIS mapping and analysis to support MS4 compliance and flood resilience analyses, plans, and reports
Collecting GIS data for municipal infrastructure and capital projects through digitization of as-builts, imagery review, and field reconnaissance.
Documenting GIS data and processes for technical and non-technical audiences
Developing and implementing ArcGIS Online applications
Translating broad planning or environmental questions into defensible GIS-based investigations and clearly communicating methods and findings
Planning-focused activities can include:
Collaborating with experts in planning, GIS, civil engineering, and ecological sciences to support clients/projects in community and watershed flood resilience planning, municipal stormwater quality and flood/drainage management, MS4 permit compliance and TMDL planning/accounting, and stormwater financing
Technical writing and review of SOPs, plans, reports, and manuals
Field monitoring and investigations including stormwater inspections, outfall screening, stormwater sampling, biological monitoring, SWPPP inspections
Who You Are
Required Qualifications:
BS in Planning, GIS and Spatial Data Science, Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering or related field
5-7 years of related knowledge and direct involvement in:
- urban hydrology and water quality principles
- municipal stormwater management (i.e., MS4 permits, TMDLs, flood mitigation, capital planning)
- technical writing and communication of technical subject matter to technical and layman audiences
- ArcGIS Pro software for data management, spatial analysis, and creating maps for decision-making (intermediate to advanced proficiency required)
- developing and configuring ArcGIS Online feature services, web maps, web apps, Field Maps, and Survey123, and Experience Builder (intermediate to advanced proficiency required)
- GIS data management and analysis with municipal and environmental data (parcels, land use, buildings, roads, impervious surface, watersheds, streams, storm sewer and other utilities, water quality, etc.)
- Managing, organizing, and presenting data in MS Excel, and QA/QC of large datasets
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Python/Visual Basic programming
Automating GIS processes with Model Builder, arcpy, and script tools
Understanding of ESRI infrastructure (Enterprise, Desktop software, ArcGIS Online, Portal) and ArcGIS administration (user types and roles, licensing, permissions, etc.)
Experience with reading land development construction drawings, as-built plans, and municipal infrastructure system maps
Experience with writing standard operating procedures, manuals, reports, plans, etc.
