Team Profile
The MSIM Sustainability team is responsible for the execution of MSIM’s sustainable investing business strategy globally, including developing MSIM's ESG investment integration standards, helping to launch thematic Sustainable Funds, advising sales professionals and clients on sustainability matters, and producing sustainability data, tools and research in support of our investment teams. The Sustainability team also comprises the Global Stewardship function, which coordinates our stewardship and investee engagement agenda. Integration of ESG data into the business is a critical element in the success of this program.
Role Summary
The ESG data landscape is rapidly changing, with new data becoming available every day – from existing providers, new providers, internal sources, and open source. ESG data and analytics are becoming table stakes in investment management, as they are essential for both client acquisition and retention. The team is seeking a Quantitative Analyst to support various investment teams’ ESG data, analytics and reporting needs to help position the firm now and in the future as a leader in sustainable investing. Successful candidates will have a dual passion for sustainability and investment, as well as demonstrated expertise in data analysis and a commitment to client service. This is a high paced role that requires the ability to manage multiple stakeholder requests and competing priorities. The role also requires an ability to manipulate and review large data sets, identify detailed data quality issues, and troubleshoot. The successful candidate will report to a Product Manager on the Sustainability Data & Technology team and work closely with several internal groups globally, including Data, Technology, Investment teams, Operations, Legal and Compliance.
Primary Responsibilities
The Quantitative Analyst’s responsibilities will include and are not limited to:
- Partner with ESG Product Owners, Portfolio Specialists, Technology and Investment teams to support ESG specific data and technology needs across various asset classes
- Support execution and project management of innovative sustainable investing analytics, including portfolio and security-level dashboards, ESG reports, and relevant ESG data visualization tools
- Assist with visualization and quality assurance of data, presentation, and other materials for a diverse set of partners, clients, and senior decision makers
- Act as an internal expert in ESG vendor data; developing a deep understanding of vendor methodologies
- Respond to various internal & external ESG data needs and queries such as client queries, external surveys, and investment team data requests.
Skills required
The ideal candidate has an analytical mindset; an entrepreneurial, collaborative disposition; and a commitment to advancing social and environmental outcomes. Desired qualifications and experience level include:
- 0-3 years of relevant analytical experience
- Strong coding and programming skills (e.g. Python, SQL)
- Expert in using MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) with exceptionally strong Excel skills: ability to manipulate large datasets with v-look ups, pivot tables, macros, etc.
- Strong data science and data visualization skills
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through
- Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
- Strong academic credentials and/or professional experience in investment management or data analysis
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
- Minimum bachelor’s degree, ideally in a quantitative discipline
Highly desirable
- Experience with sustainability data broadly and ESG metrics, understanding how sustainability metrics are calculated, how underlying data is gathered, which data points are relevant in various contexts
- Experience working closely with datasets and/or providers, conducting ESG investment analysis using relevant data and frameworks or having deep knowledge of ESG reporting conventions and emerging standards gained in an audit and reporting capacity.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $90,000 and $110,000 per year for Associate level at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
