You will provide senior professional management and leadership of the full range of environmental services including: carbon reduction to achieve net zero carbon, sustainable and active travel, environmental legal compliance, sustainable design and construction, environmental management systems, biodiversity protection and enhancement, sustainable communications and staff engagement.
A particular focus will be to lead delivery of our programme of clinical sustainability projects

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Working with our partners in the BNSSG Integrated Care System (ICS), the postholder will:
develop, lead and monitor the implementation of the ICS Green Plan ambitions and objectives.
provide senior professional management and leadership of the full range of environmental services including: carbon reduction to achieve net zero carbon, sustainable and active travel, environmental legal compliance, sustainable design and construction, environmental management systems, biodiversity protection and enhancement, sustainable communications and staff engagement.
contribute to the Trust strategy core area of focus of Being an Anchor in the Community by supporting staff to deliver services in a sustainable way.
proactively embed sustainability and efficiency within the organisation and engage key stakeholders including external partners to deliver the NBT and ICS vision to become a leader in the field of sustainable healthcare.
ensure that the NBT sustainability management and governance frameworks are fit for purpose and effectively support NBT to meet its obligations and reporting requirements.
develop key alliances and positively engage with external agencies and
stakeholders to enhance NBT and the ICS’s reputation and ensure stakeholders are fully involved in improving the sustainability footprint of the Trust and wider health and social care system.
Authorised signatory for sustainability expenditure.
Budget holder for the NBT sustainability function.
Monitor / contribute to financial incentives through the impact of sustainability initiatives.
Line management of relevant sustainability staff. This includes recruitment, managing attendance, appraisal, and first line management of any grievance, capability, behavioural, or disciplinary matters raised.
Devise and deliver or implement as necessary core training on sustainability across NBT and partner organisations
Within the context of the BNSSG ICS Green Plan, to lead the development, implementation, programme management and monitoring of the NBT Green Plan to ensure ambitions, aims and objectives and goals are met, ensuring the Plan is signed off and owned at Trust Board level and underpins the delivery of NBT’s sustainability agenda.
To collaborate fully on and actively participate in the development of the ICS Green Plan, taking leadership roles for identified workstreams for the ICS and ensuring the NBT plans are aligned to the ICS Green Plan.
To lead the long- term strategic and coordinated approach to sustainability, ensuring an explicit contribution to ‘Delivering a Net Zero NHS’ within NBT.
To provide expert knowledge on all aspects of environmental sustainability which will require making judgments involving complex facts or situations which relate to environmental sustainability – requiring analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options, where unique characteristics are evident and where there may be no obvious solution.
To work with all relevant areas of NBT to ensure that sustainable development is integrated into our core business and ensure our use of resources is efficient. This will include, but not be limited to operational, estates, facilities, procurement, human resources and finance colleagues.
To oversee and contribute to the development and implementation of NBT’s strategic travel plans.
To work closely with teams to promote good operational sustainable best practice and help develop ideas for new sustainability pipeline schemes.
To ensure the development and promotion of carbon efficiency within NBT through staff engagement and social change. This work will include developing plans with communications team as well as the implementation of local and national initiatives.
To present economic, developmental and/or environmental sustainability proposals including business cases to management for funding considerations.
To encourage sustainable practices across the partner organisations and within the Trust, ensuring that global and complex issues of sustainability are simplified and made tangible to patients, colleagues and stakeholders.
To be responsible for the NBT sustainability policies, strategies and operating procedures in relation to energy, waste, procurement, environmental and social change improvements.
To provide sustainability advice on energy, waste, procurement, environmental and social change best practice.
To ensure that surveys, audits and regular monitoring are undertaken to meet sustainability, environmental and efficiency objectives to assure delivery on established carbon saving initiatives as appropriate.
To be an excellent communicator with the passion to embed environmentally sustainable health and social care services.
To contribute to the development of good governance arrangements by helping to coordinate the work of the ICS’s and NBT’s sustainability governance structures.
To raise the level of awareness, commitment to, and active engagement of staff with the sustainability agenda.
Support teams to ensure that procurement processes are in place to ensure suppliers are working to deliver NHS-wide Net Zero commitments.
Work with partners to establish a social value baseline in the ICS and NBT, supporting work to improve performance and ensure social value forms part of business cases and procurement evaluation.
Ensure the communication of NBT’s sustainability objectives, patient services plans, and strategic direction to internal and external audiences through formal presentations and networking activities.
To ensure NBT remains compliant with NHS data returns and any statutory returns as applicable.
To work with external organisations and regulatory bodies ensuring compliance with legislation, codes of practice and other requirements.
To promote and maintain a culture of high performance throughout all appropriate working teams and maintain the position of the ICS and NBT as an exemplar for sustainability in the health and social care sector
