Summary
This position is located at Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in the Maintenance Division - Building and Utilities Unit. The primary purpose of this position is maintaining historic structures, visitor facilities, and associated utilities through hands-on maintenance across multiple trades including carpentry, plumbing, and grounds work.
Major Duties
Carpentry: Constructs, modifies, and repairs building components such as framing, storage areas, doors, windows, and flooring. Installs siding, roofing, trim, cabinets, countertops, and floor coverings including tile, linoleum, and carpet. Plumbing: Installs, modifies, and repairs utility, supply, and disposal systems for water, sewage, oil, and gas, as well as fixtures such as toilets, tubs, showers, and fire sprinkler systems. Interprets blueprints and building plans to independently plan and execute installations and repairs using specialized tools and trade techniques. Painting: Independently performs painting, decorating, and refinishing of interior and exterior surfaces, including color matching and application of specialized finishes. Prepares surfaces, selects appropriate materials and tools, and applies various techniques to achieve a smooth, finished appearance. Laboring: Performs a wide range of manual tasks including transporting heavy materials, assisting with erosion control, digging holes for sign installation, and cleaning drainage systems. Conducts roadside litter patrol, cleans work areas and fire grates, unloads supplies, handles timber, and maintains tool caches. Also cleans animal enclosures, removes trail obstacles, shovels snow, and operates and maintains hand and power tools.
