The Opportunity:
BluMetric (BLM) is currently seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and reliable full time Junior Environmental Scientist or engineer in training for our Yellowknife location. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and technical skills, knowledge of regulations, and writing abilities. They will be expected to perform a number of tasks that may include the execution and management of a variety of environmental and hazardous materials site assessments/characterization and inspection/oversight of contractors, proposal and technical report preparation, data analysis and management using MS Excel and Word, in addition to performing the associated field activities. This is a future vacancy within the organization.
Job Responsibilities:
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary project team in both field and office settings to meet project objectives.
- Implementation, and execution of field programs including but not limited to environmental site assessments, site characterization, site monitoring, hazardous building materials assessments, hazardous materials abatement oversight and air sampling, indoor/outdoor air quality assessments, spill response and management, soil, and potable water, surface water and groundwater monitoring.
- Water treatment, hazardous building materials abatement oversight, and remediation oversight.
- Technical report writing.
- Data management and interpretation.
Key Qualifications, Education, and Skills:
- BSc. in Earth Sciences/Environmental Sciences or a B.A.Sc in civil or environmental engineering and be eligible to become a P.Geo. or P.Eng.
- Experience in environmental site assessments (Phase I, II) and the characterization of soils, surface water and groundwater.
- Knowledge of Territorial and Federal environmental guidelines and regulations.
- Experience should be 1 to 4 years of relevant experience in order to support engineering and environmental geosciences projects for industrial, private, and government clients, preferably consulting.
- Knowledge of geology, physical and chemical hydrogeology including contaminated site investigations, delineation and remediation.
- Experience should include surface water and groundwater monitoring and sampling procedures, borehole drilling and monitoring well installation, logging of field samples, and the preparation of borehole logs.
- Knowledge of Worker’s Safety and Compensation Commission hazardous materials regulations and guidelines, or past experience conducting hazardous materials related work and/or industrial hygiene air sampling would be considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. The ability to write professional technical reports is paramount.
- Ability to work independently both in the office and in the field.
- Positive attitude, teamwork and ability to problem-solve is essential.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to travel broadly with overnight trips being common, and flexibility to work outside normal business hours as required.
- Ability to travel across the north if required.
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions and potentially long workdays.
- Ability to work at remote sites and remote camps.
- Medically fit and physically capable of wearing standard construction site personal protective equipment as well as respirators and protective coveralls.
