The Global Health & Safety (H&S) Manager will serve as the primary leader of the company’s office and workplace safety culture. For Spain this role will be responsible for ensuring 100% legal compliance with Spanish Health, Safety and Occupational Risk Regulations Globally this role will be responsible for managing, implementing and updating ICON’s unified global Health & Safety Policy and Procedures that ensures the wellbeing of our 40,000+ employees across 90 locations worldwide.
The role of the Health & Safety Manager is to advise the VPs, Directors, Managers and Global H&S Committee on all safety, health and welfare matters to ensure that ICON complies with its statutory obligations in each country in which it operates. To work to prevent workplace accidents and promote health and safety awareness and education to fellow employees. To formulate and update policies and procedures which promote a culture of health and safety in ICON. To ensure training and education plans are in place and are delivered to all ICON staff globally. To work to ensure proper and robust Health & safety processes are in place in all ICON offices and locations around the world. Implement and maintains a health and safety program involving hazard identification evaluation and control, accident/injury prevention, hazardous material/waste management, emergency preparedness, fire/life safety, ergonomics, hygiene, and environmental regulatory compliance.
The role is primarily office‑based in Madrid or Barcelona, with the option for hybrid working.
The role:
Spanish Compliance (Local Expert)
Serve as the company’s Internal Prevention Coordinator (Coordinador de Prevención), ensuring full adherence to all Spanish Health & Safety decrees and laws. Act as the primary point of contact for the Servicio de Prevención Ajeno (SPA) and the Labor Inspectorate. Maintain the Prevention Plan, Risk Assessments (Evaluación de Riesgos), and Emergency & Evacuation Plans for all ICON Spanish sites.
Global Strategic Oversight
- Develops, Implements and controls site specific Health & Safety policies and procedures based on local guidelines and corporate policies and procedures.
- Understanding the application of the Health and Safety at Work laws for each country relevant to the ICON’s business.
- Keep up to date with changes in current legislation and to bring to the attention of ICON.
- Implement and be responsible for the delivery of the Environmental Health and Safety Management System and updating the systems and policies as the business requires.
- Update all departments on necessary Environmental Health & Safety policies and ensure they operate to any necessary procedures and instructions.
- As part of the Management System ensure that all “Risk assessments” as required by legislation are conducted and reviewed at relevant intervals and to maintain records of the same.
- To review and recommend control measures and advise on the standard of P.P.E. issued to employees.
- Ensure standardized Environmental Health and Safety inspections are carried out in all locations.
- Management of the design and delivering of Health & Safety training to all staff globally including New Starters.
- To lead, or coordinate with trained individuals, the investigation and root cause/corrective action investigations and process into all accidents and near-misses.
- To promote a culture of Environmental Health & Safety in ICON and to encourage best practice implementation and continuous improvement ideas from staff.
- Ensure ICON provides a safe place to work for staff in all offices and locations globally and that policies, processes and best practices are in place to support this.
- Review fire and emergency plans for each ICON location globally and ensure compliance.
- Advise on Environmental Health Safety for Visitor Management in all ICON offices and locations.
- Ensure Safety Statements for each office and location is complete and updated in compliance with local laws and best practice. Conduct Environmental Health & Safety audits, provide Environmental Health & Safety input for tenders and RFIs. Chair the Global Environmental Health & Safety Committee meetings and provide quarterly update reports to this committee.
- Ensures that all site specific EHS related policies, procedures and way of working are compliant with local law and legislation
- Leads the internal Safety Committee
- Directs and promotes a proactive safety culture and safe working.
- Support the conduction of audits, perform internal HSE audits, and client site audits
- Manages the EHS Administration
- Direct, manage and provide expertise for incident investigations, case management, near misses, environmental and/or equipment damage.
- Serve as EHS subject matter expert and provide information to management about EHS related performance, issues and status of the EHS management system in regards to effectiveness and compliance
- Manages and reviews work site hazard assessments, identifies unsafe acts/conditions or unsafe behaviours, ergonomics, provides support, guidance and recommendations for corrective action to management team.
- Act as a consultant for local Office Managers in 90+ locations to ensure they meet local safety standards and corporate KPIs.
- Define and track global safety metrics (incident rates, training completion, and ergonomic assessment participation).
- Establish a remote and on-site audit schedule to assess the safety health of the global portfolio.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: University degree in Engineering, HR, or Occupational Health & Safety.
- Spanish Certification: Must hold the Nivel Superior en Prevención de Riesgos Laborales (covering Safety, Hygiene, and Ergonomics/Psychosociology).
- Experience: 5+ years in a Health & Safety role, with at least 2 years in a multinational corporate environment.
- Languages: Native/Bilingual Spanish and Professional Fluency in English (additional languages are a plus for the global scope).
- Soft Skills: Exceptional cross-cultural communication skills; ability to influence local leaders without direct authority and excellent presentation skills.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in H&S Management Software and data visualization tools (e.g., PowerBI).
