ABOUT THE ROLE
The Operations Compliance Auditor will play a vital role in ensuring compliance with operational, waste management, and vendor guidelines during CNE. This dynamic position combines responsibilities in waste auditing, daily operational support, and vendor compliance auditing. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and capable of handling multiple responsibilities in a dynamic event environment. This role is essential in maintaining smooth event operations and achieving compliance with CNE rules an regulations and event-specific standards.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Waste Auditing and Compliance
- Conduct waste audits during the event to assess the effectiveness of waste diversion strategies and identify contamination issues
- Collaborate with the stakeholders and vendors on waste collection and processing, ensuring compliance with CNE waste management regulations
- Ensure vendors and attendees follow waste sorting protocols by providing guidance at waste stations and monitoring compliance with recycling and composting requirements
- Track and report waste diversion metrics
- Provide post-event reporting on waste diversion rates and recommendations for improvement
Vendor Compliance Audits
- Conduct on-site audits of vendors to ensure compliance with event-specific guidelines, including:
- Approved waste management protocols
- Use of recyclable or compostable materials
- Adherence to other operational provisions outlined in vendor agreements
- Document and report any instances of vendor non-compliance, escalating issues to the Event Operations Manager when necessary
- Act as the primary point of contact for vendor-related compliance questions or concerns during the event
Operations Support
- Provide general support to the Operations team, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations before, during and after the event
- Assist in the setup and breakdown of event infrastructure, including waste diversion stations, signage, and vendor booths
- Conduct periodic checks of the event site to ensure operational readiness and address any issues as they arise.
- Monitor high-traffic areas and assist with crowd management to maintain safety and efficiency
- Assist in updating and distributing various manuals within the Operations Department; along with assistance in tasks performed as assigned within the department
Compliance Reporting and Recommendations
- Compile detailed reports on vendor compliance, waste auditing results, and operational observations
- Provide recommendations for improving compliance processes, waste diversion strategies, and overall operational efficiency
- Collaborate with the Event Operations team to develop and implement corrective actions for non-compliance issues
Stakeholder Engagement
- Communicate compliance expectations clearly to vendors, staff, and volunteers, providing training or guidance as needed
- Work closely with the Operations Manager and Coordinator and other service providers to ensure seamless execution of waste management and compliance protocols
- Serve as a liaison between the operations team and vendors to address on-site concerns and resolve compliance-related issues promptly
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
· Must have a valid G2 or G driver's license
· A background in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field is preferred
· 1-3 years of experience in waste management, environmental auditing, or sustainability coordination. Experience working at events or fairs is an asset
· Must be available to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and overtime as needed during CNE event from August 21st to September 7th, 2025
· Strong understanding of waste management practices and diversion strategies, including recycling, composting, and landfill reduction techniques
· Familiarity with local waste management regulations (e.g., City of Toronto waste bylaws) and best practices for event waste diversion
· Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address waste diversion challenges, such as contamination or non-compliance by vendors
· Capable of identifying compliance issues, investigating root causes, and recommending practical solutions
· High level of attention to detail for accurate tracking, monitoring, and reporting of waste data
· High degree of accuracy and attention to detail, especially in auditing and reporting
· Strong organization skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and maintain accurate records
· Strong customer service skills with the ability to build positive relationships and manage challenging situations professionally
· Excellent written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with vendors, staff, attendees and the general public
· Ability to engage in physical tasks, including safe lifting and moving heavy items - required when as inspecting vendor booths, setting up waste stations, handling bins, and walking throughout the event site-outdoors
· Comfortable working in areas that contain bright lights, loud noises and crowds of people
