SUMMARY:
The Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company policies. This role provides guidance and training to employees, conducts audits and inspections, and promotes a proactive safety culture across the organization. The Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring safe work practices in the field, shop, and office environments, particularly in relation to industrial refrigeration, mechanical, and electrical systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (Additional duties may be assigned).
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments at industrial refrigeration job sites, cold storage facilities, and construction projects.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, IIAR, PSM/RMP, and other applicable safety regulations for ammonia and CO2 systems.
- Develop and update safety policies, procedures, and programs, including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work, ammonia awareness, PPE, and hazard communication.
- Provide safety training to employees, including new hire orientation, toolbox talks, annual refresher courses, and specialized training for industrial refrigeration technicians (ammonia/CO2 leak response, PSM compliance).
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses; prepare reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain records of safety training, inspections, and compliance documentation.
- Collaborate with project managers, supervisors, and technicians to resolve safety concerns and implement corrective measures.
- Lead initiatives for continuous improvement of EHS programs and employee engagement.
- Assist with emergency response planning and drills, including ammonia and CO2 leak scenarios, evacuation protocols, and coordination with local emergency responders.
- Support environmental compliance, including waste management, spill prevention, and emissions tracking.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None directly; may provide functional guidance and training to field technicians and supervisors regarding safety practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an EHS role, preferably in industrial refrigeration, construction, HVAC, or mechanical contracting.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and IIAR regulations.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST), or similar certification preferred.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to train and engage employees at all levels.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to investigate incidents and recommend solutions.
- Ability to work independently, travel to field sites, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
EQUIPMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work in office, shop, and field environments, including exposure to loud noise, chemicals, and varying temperatures. Must be able to wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, respirators). Ability to climb ladders, access confined spaces, and lift up to 40 pounds occasionally. Travel to job sites and customer facilities as needed.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Familiarity with EHS management systems and safety training platforms (e.g., ISNetworld, Avetta, or similar). Ability to create reports, presentations, and safety training materials.
