Position Details
We are seeking a Human Resources Manager to oversee all aspects of our human resources practices and processes and to support the needs of our team members as they continue growing our positive impact on the economy and ecology of the Appalachian region. The Human Resources Manager will work with the operations and management teams to foster a vibrant, inclusive employee experience that supports the holistic well-being of our staff. In support of this goal, the position will oversee our HR policies and procedures, training and development, recruitment and selection, compensation and benefits administration, retention, and performance evaluation. The Human Resource Manager will report to the Director of Finance and Operations, and work closely with team members at all levels of the organization.
Location
The HR Manager may work out of one of the organization’s four offices in Boone, North Carolina, Charlottesville and Norton, Virginia, and Knoxville, Tennessee, or remotely in our region. If working remotely, the candidate should reside in, or willing to move to, one of the following states: Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, District of Columbia, Virginia, or West Virginia. Travel within the region for annual team and staff retreats is required, in addition to occasional travel related to other organizational events.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted resource for staff, supporting employees’ professional growth and coordinating regular staff engagement opportunities through surveys, open feedback sessions, and stay interviews.
- Oversee and administer the organization’s HR policies and procedures to support consistency, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
- Assist managers with the recruiting, hiring, onboarding and offboarding processes.
- Administer all employee benefits, including management of new hire enrollment, benefits renewals, and annual open enrollment cycles.
- Partner with leadership and managers in developing retention strategies, professional development, and succession plans to prevent undesired turnover and advance smooth employment transitions.
- Support the performance evaluation process and assist managers with team members who are facing challenges.
- Maintain AV’s HRIS system in BambooHR, which includes all employee files.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of three to five years of Human Resources experience in the above areas, with preference for prior non-profit HR experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, a related degree with equivalent experience, or other HR trainings and certifications
- Strong knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations
- Thorough knowledge of payroll processes, IRS and multi-state payroll regulations, and benefits options
- Excellent interpersonal and active listening skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
- Ability to act with humility, empathy, integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Ability to act independently on HR tasks and initiatives, but collaborate across the organization as needed
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, G-Suite, HRIS, or related software
Compensation:
This is a full-time exempt position. Appalachian Voices offers competitive compensation and benefits that include employer-paid health care, vision, and dental policies with options to include family members at a reduced cost; short- and long-term disability plans; an optional flexible spending account; generous paid vacation and parental leave; flexible working hours; and an employer-matched retirement plan.
Salary is commensurate with experience; however, the expected salary range is between $75,000 and 95,000. Appalachian Voices is committed to equity in pay practices.
