Position Summary
RSI is currently recruiting for an Environmental Chemist II, supporting our Environmental Remediation organization. This position is located in Tempe, AZ or San Francisco, CA area.
RSI is seeking a self-starting, motivated Environmental Chemist II to evaluate, select and apply standard scientific procedures and techniques and manage analytical services to address the scope of work on environmental remediation, hazardous waste management, and hazardous building materials assessment and mitigation projects in accordance with Company standards, environmental regulatory criteria, and contractual obligations. This role requires the ability to work independently on assignments requiring the consistent exercise of discretion and judgement to analyze, interpret or make deductions based on varying facts or circumstances. The role requires the ability to assess data needs, data collection methodology, and field and laboratory analyses. Responsible for preparing project data collection planning and reporting submittals and review of documents prepared by other chemists and scientists.
Primary Responsibilities
- Independently or as part of a team plan, coordinate, and monitor work on environmental sampling projects.
- Monitor subcontractor performance against plans and assist in resolving variances from specifications.
- Provide technical support on environmental investigations and remediation projects for remedial treatment technology and emerging contaminants.
- Perform data validation for organic, inorganic, radiological, and MEC analytical methods for multiple disciplines and projects including comparison of data to data quality objectives, or senior review of such validation.
- Complete related documentation (field reports, logs, meeting minutes, online submittal sites), in a timely and accurate manner.
- Prepare technical documents including, but not limited to, Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs), Quality Control Summary Reports (QCSRs), and data usability assessments.
- Provides peer review of SAPs, QAPPs, QCSRs and data usability assessments prepared by another Chemist.
- Organizes and conducts project meetings.
- Perform functions in RSI’s environmental data management system, including writing and/or executing basic SQL queries.
Required Education and Experience
- BS in chemical, environmental, biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering, with at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics (BS in Chemistry preferred)
- Three (3) to Five (5)+ years of full time, post college work experience, including two (2) years of experience in areas of environmental sampling, analytical methods, and analytical testing, data validation, data evaluation, or other environmental services.
- HAZWOPER 40 Hour Certification with current 8 Hour Refresher.
- Continuing education in the field of chemistry is expected.
Job Knowledge/Qualifications
- Implement Federal EPA, DoD, DOE environmental data quality regulations and guidelines.
- Familiar with environmental industry standard analytical methodologies for determining the presence of chemicals and radionuclides and be able to assess data usability.
- Familiar with environmental and radiochemical analytical requirements for organizing waste streams.
- Familiar with the Quality Systems Manual (QSM) and the Multi Agency Radiological Laboratory Analytical Protocols (MARLAP).
- Understands the applicable regulatory and client requirements relevant to projects.
- Able to apply technical knowledge to multiple projects at same time.
- Understands appropriate protocols for the collection of samples and other field data, including operations of common field analytical instruments.
- Understands industry standard principles, terms, procedures and practices of inorganic, organic and radiochemistry.
- Understands general theory of radiochemical analytical methods such as gamma spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, and gas flow proportional counting.

- Able to use logical thought processes to analyze information and develop basic conclusions and recommendations using project data.
