Our Renewable Energy client is currently looking for a Solar PV Designer / Draughtsman / Engineer to join their team in Sommerset West CT.
PositionSummary
We are seeking a Solar PV Designer / Draughtsman / Engineer to support the full design function for our commercial and industrial (C&I) solar PV systems. The role will work closely with project management, engineering, and construction teams to deliver compliant, buildable, and optimized solar designs from concept through to as-built. This role is suited to a technically strong individual with practical solar experience and a good understanding of South African grid-connected SSEG requirements.
Minimum Requirements
• Qualification in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Draughting, or similar.
• Proven experience in commercial / industrial solar PV design.
• Strong understanding of Grid-tied PV systems, SSEG processes in South Africa, NRS / SANS standards.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD (essential).
• Experience with HelioScope, PVsyst, or similar (advantageous).
Role Type
• Full-time / contract (to be discussed).
• Office-based with project team, with limited site interaction as required.
Key Responsibilities
Solar PV System Design
• Develop concept, detailed, and as-built designs for commercial solar PV systems
• Produce AC and DC layouts, string configurations, inverter placement, and equipment schedules
• Prepare and update Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) and general arrangement drawings
• Size PV arrays, inverters, protection devices, and associated equipment
Technical Modelling & Tools
• Perform yield and performance modelling using tools such as HelioScope, PVsyst, or equivalent.
• Support energy yield assumptions and design optimization.
• Assist with shading analysis and layout optimization.
Compliance & Documentation
• Ensure designs comply with NRS 097-2-1, SANS standards, municipal SSEG requirements, and utility guidelines.
• Prepare technical documentation for municipal SSEG submissions, engineering sign-off and construction packs.
• Support final as-built documentation post-installation.
Project & Construction Support
• Provide technical support to project managers during construction and commissioning.
• Assist with design revisions arising from site constraints or municipal feedback.
• Review site photos and redline drawings to confirm as-built accuracy.
Coordination & Communication
• Liaise with internal teams, consultants, and external engineers.
• Support interaction with municipalities where technical clarification is required.
• Work alongside EPC and O&M teams to ensure design intent is maintained.
