Your Job
The Operations Technician is responsible for performing routine facilities maintenance tasks in one or more fields (e.g. carpentry; electrical; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); plumbing, etc.). As directed, this role performs general repair and scheduled preventative maintenance of buildings, exhibits, structures, equipment, etc.
Your Essential Responsibilities

- Complete all Operations work orders as assigned.
- Perform minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry and excavation to maintain zoo exhibits, buildings, and grounds.
- Replace broken windows; repair doors, door locks, closets, mechanical equipment or vehicles; install and repair fencing/public barriers, concrete or asphalt surfaces.
- Maintain records and documents of scheduled maintenance or other repairs as required.
- Perform general fabrication to animal caging, crates, exhibits utilizing stick, MIG, and TIG welding equipment.
- Inspect condition of roofs; clean roof gutters and drains.
- Inspect and repair interior/exterior lighting; install and repair lamps, ballasts, and covers.
- Move, repair, and relocate office furniture, files, etc.
- Analyze work orders to determine materials required and methods to complete tasks; prepare cost estimates for work orders.
- Requisition, pick up, load, and unload supplies, material, and equipment; monitor inventory.
- Maintain clean and clutter free shop and work area(s) involving general cleaning duties.
- Assist with set up/break down of special/private events including set up of tables, chairs, tents, stage, lighting, or other equipment.
- Utilize a wide array of hand and power tools and other equipment; maintain tools and equipment in good working order and in safe working condition.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests as directed including after hours.
- Effectively communicate and demonstrate interpersonal skills with all levels of employees in a clear and professional manner.
- Demonstrate and adhere to TZMI’s workplace values.
- Know and follow zoo policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and assigned training sessions.
- Operate heavy equipment as required by the job assignments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no direct reports.
What We Expect
Required Qualifications, Education and/or Experience
- Must be 18 years or older, possess a valid driver’s license, and be insurable on TZMI’s insurance carrier
- At least 2 years related experience and/or training in one or more of the following trades: carpentry; electrical; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); plumbing
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; to write routine reports and correspondence; to communicate effectively before groups of customers, employees of TZMI, and the general public
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Microsoft Word, Excel; CMMS software; Internet Browser(s)- Explorer, Chrome, Safari, etc.
