Description
About the Role
Fermi America is seeking a Lead Civil Engineer to join a small, on-site engineering team supporting the design and construction of multi-gigawatt gas and nuclear generation facilities. This execution-focused role provides technical leadership and oversight of A/E firms and EPC contractors to ensure designs are constructible, code-compliant, and aligned with field execution. The position requires strong technical judgment and hands-on construction experience to identify risks early, challenge assumptions, and drive safe, efficient, and timely delivery. Nuclear experience is a plus, but demonstrated industrial or power plant construction capability is the priority. This role will directly contribute to delivering one of the largest power infrastructure programs in the world.
Key Responsibilities
· Serve as the Owner’s CSA technical authority for gas and nuclear generation, substations, cooling systems, and campus infrastructure
· Provide technical oversight of external A/E firms and EPC contractors to ensure designs are complete, code-compliant, constructible, and execution-ready
· Perform limited in-house CSA design development, as required, to define Owner intent, address urgent field or design issues, and bridge scope gaps between A/E and EPC teams
· Review and validate civil, structural, and architectural designs, engineering assumptions (including geotechnical recommendations), and structural approaches for constructability and alignment with field execution
· Identify design gaps, risks, inefficiencies, and technical issues; drive timely resolution and support rapid decision-making
· Provide on-site engineering support during construction of foundations, concrete/steel structures, utilities, grading, and site infrastructure
· Review RFIs, submittals, inspections, QA/QC activities, field changes, and commissioning readiness of systems in coordination with EPC and construction teams
· Support development of Basis of Design, Owner standards, and technical specifications
· Coordinate across mechanical, electrical, nuclear, and construction teams to ensure integrated, executable designs and advise leadership on engineering risk, cost, schedule, and constructability impacts
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or related discipline)
· 10+ years of civil/structural engineering experience supporting heavy industrial, power generation, or large infrastructure projects
· Proven experience reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, and contractor submittals and working directly with EPC contractors, A/E firms, and construction teams
· Strong technical expertise in structural concrete and steel, heavy equipment foundations, and site civil systems (grading, drainage, and utilities), with solid constructability judgment and field awareness
· Demonstrated ability to identify risks early, drive technical resolution, and provide clear technical leadership through strong communication skills
· Ability to work on-site in Amarillo, Texas
Preferred Qualifications
· Professional License and/or Certification
· Experience supporting combined cycle gas and/or nuclear power plant projects, including work in Owner’s engineering, Owner’s representative, or EPC roles on large infrastructure programs
· Familiarity with nuclear safety-related structures and NRC-regulated facilities, as well as substations, switchyards, cooling towers, and water infrastructure systems
