Role Overview
Smith is seeking a highly analytical, independent, and curious Summer Sustainability Intern to support our company’s sustainability disclosures and carbon accounting system management. This research- and analysis-driven internship is designed to:
- Evaluate the quality and completeness of Smith’s climate disclosures
- Identify gaps relative to external reporting frameworks
- Help design scalable, auditable internal processes for carbon accounting data collection and reporting
The intern will collaborate across multiple departments, including Operations, Finance, Legal, Trading, Learning & Development, and Marketing, to enhance the clarity, consistency, and usability of sustainability data and strategy to strengthen internal data governance.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct a structured CDP gap analysis and support 2026 CDP reporting by:
- Reviewing existing disclosures against current CDP requirements
- Identifying opportunities to enhance data completeness, strengthen methodologies, and refine narrative clarity
- Developing an evidence-based set of recommendations to improve narrative clarity, internal alignment, and auditability
- Support drafting and refining CDP responses and updating supporting internal evidence
- Lead analytical workstreams to improve upon FY 2025 carbon accounting practices in preparation for FY 2026 reporting, including:
- Evaluate data quality, availability, and risks across emissions categories in collaboration with
- Develop and maintain carbon accounting and reporting process documentation in , including:
- Step-by-step process descriptions
- Roles and responsibilities (i.e., RACI-style documentation)
- Calculation methodologies, assumptions, and control points aligned with the GHG Protocol
- Use Jira to track data gaps, dependencies, and required follow-up actions
- Support organization and validation of emissions and sustainability data within Novisto (our sustainability data management partner)
- Present complex analysis in a clear and actionable format, such as gap analysis summaries, process maps, internal guidance documents, and technical memos, tailored for the Smith Sustainability Group and senior leadership.
Specific Qualifications (“must haves”)
- Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to evaluate and develop strategy narratives, governance structures, and technical documentation
- Clear and structured written communication skills, particularly for technical and process documentation
- Familiarity with CDP reporting, GHG Protocol, TCFD recommendations, and corporate greenhouse gas inventories
- Demonstrated independence, intellectual curiosity, and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field
- Coursework or experience in sustainability reporting, carbon accounting, corporate ESG disclosures, or audit-style gap analysis
- Experience with tools such as Confluence, Jira, ESG data management platforms , carbon accounting software , or similar systems.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
Reporting Structure and Expected Outcomes
This position reports to the Global Sustainability Analyst and involves close collaboration with senior-level executives dedicated to sustainability strategy and program development. The intern will work cross-functionally within a well-defined analytical scope, contributing to the integration of robust, auditable sustainability disclosures and carbon accounting processes across business operations.
