Description
The Senior Completions Engineer is responsible for the technical design, planning, and execution of Fervo’s geothermal well completions and workover activities, spanning initial stimulation through ongoing intervention and optimization. This role is central to translating subsurface objectives into safe, repeatable, and cost-effective field operations and plays a key role in scaling Fervo’s development model from pilot projects to commercial deployment.
Working closely with subsurface, drilling, production, and facilities teams, the Completions Engineer provides hands-on technical leadership during both planning and execution phases. Success in this role requires comfort operating in high-ambiguity, execution-heavy environments, frequent field engagement, and a strong bias toward learning-driven iteration and operational excellence.
Requirements
Responsibilities
Completions & Workover Engineering Execution
- Lead the technical design, planning, and execution of geothermal well completions, stimulations, and workover/intervention operations
- Develop detailed, step-by-step operational procedures to safely achieve well objectives in compliance with regulatory and internal HSE requirements
- Provide hands-on field engineering support during active operations and serve as the primary point of contact for completion and intervention-related issues
- Support execution across the full well lifecycle, including initial completions, stimulation, recompletions, remedial work, and well interventions
Well Design Optimization & Subsurface Integration
- Partner with subsurface and reservoir engineering teams to optimize completion architecture, stimulation designs, and operational parameters
- Support cross-functional well planning and field development optimization efforts across drilling, production, and facilities teams
- Translate subsurface objectives into executable field designs that balance performance, risk, and cost
Planning, Cost Estimation & Regulatory Support
- Develop completion and workover cost estimates ranging from early scoping estimates to detailed AFE-level and probabilistic estimates
- Support well planning and operational scheduling activities in coordination with cross-functional teams
- Compile technical and operational data required for permitting, regulatory filings, and internal approvals
- Support preparation of technical documentation for internal and external reviews
Operational Learning, Risk Management & Field Engagement
- Apply risk assessment, hazard analysis, and Management of Change (MOC) processes to planned and active operations
- Lead post-job reviews and after-action analyses to capture lessons learned and identify best practices
- Drive continuous improvement by incorporating operational learnings into future designs, procedures, and standards
- Travel frequently to field locations to oversee operations and maintain close collaboration with field personnel
- Ability to use modeling and software to improve engineering performance and establish best practices
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in unconventional completions, well interventions, or workover operations
- Minimum of 10 years in well planning or execution engineering
- Experience with multiple well completion or intervention technologies
- Strong understanding of tools and methods used to evaluate completion efficiency and optimize well performance
- Strong understanding of wellhead systems, valves, surface equipment installation, and well control
- Demonstrated experience applying risk assessment processes, hazard analysis, and Management of Change (MOC)
- Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, execution-heavy environments with shifting priorities
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to travel approximately 30–40% to field locations
Preferred Qualification
- Hands-on field experience across drilling, completions, and/or workover operations
- Experience with casing and tubing stress analysis, including thermal and mechanical loads during stimulation and injection/production
- Experience mentoring or supporting early-career engineers
- Experience working on first-of-a-kind, non-standard, or technically complex well designs
