CT HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER
Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker performs miscellaneous laboring duties in conjunction with the maintenance and repair of State highways. The incumbent will work individually or with a crew and required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, or special work projects, as determined by the Supervisor or Department. May be loaned to another crew. A valid Class C driver's license is required. This position is represented under collective bargaining.
Works with a crew performing highway maintenance activities. Typical duties include sealing cracks; loading, unloading and shoveling material; digging or repairing drainage ditches and culverts; and clearing drainage inlets. Operates light landscape, maintenance or construction equipment (pickup, cone truck, etc.). Keeps simple records.
Assists with traffic control duties such as setting up lane closures, flagging operations, moving closures, and chain control. Removes obstacles, debris and carcasses from the travel way or state rights of way. May assist in the repair or replacement of signs, fence, and guardrail posts. Performs other duties as needed, including removing litter from highway roadsides, occasionally providing direction to probationers or Special Programs workers involved in litter removal, custodial work on state facilities, and minor repairs to equipment or facilities.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
The scheduling for this crew is 4/10’s in the summer months, and 5/8’s in the winter months. Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. Will be required to work overtime, nights and weekends due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State.
Personal safety requirements include:
- Work boots, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn to provide foot and ankle support protection.
- Either long or short sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
- Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
- Provided safety gear; hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the Department.

Special Requirements
- The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
- The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
- The position(s) require(s) a valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license.
