Job Description and Duties
The Division of Engineering Services, Structures and Engineering Services, Office of Transportation Architecture, is recruiting for a Transportation Engineer (Civil) position, located in Sacramento.
Under direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer (Supervisory), Structures and Engineering Services, Office of Transportation Architecture, Building Office Engineer Branch, the Transportation Engineer (TE) (Civil) prepares complex cost estimates and construction working day schedules for buildings and transportation-related structures. The TE (Civil) provides the item costs for the Engineer's Estimate for all building and highway related structures.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Position located at 1801 30th Street, FMP I, Sacramento, CA 95816, Sacramento County.

The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24 month to 33 months rotation assignment for all permanent, full-time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees that have completed their probationary period. The program provides opportunities to rotate through diverse project delivery functional units, including mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction and a mandatory elective assignment. Assignments typically last 6 to 12 months and may involve travel and locations throughout the state.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in‑person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required.
Special Requirements
- Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
- The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Please follow the instructions below; failure to include and complete the SOQ as instructed may result in the SOQ not being considered and in disqualification from the interview. Each question must be numbered and addressed in the same order as the questions below. The SOQ must be typed, single‑spaced, no more than 1 page in length, and 12‑point Arial font.

- 2. Describe your knowledge and experience with reading and interpreting construction contract plans for transportation‑related structures and producing an estimate based on those plans.
