Donlin Gold is recruiting a Senior Field Environmental Coordinator for one of the world's largest undeveloped gold deposits, owned and operated by Donlin Gold LLC, which is owned in partnership by NOVAGOLD Resources and Paulson Advisers LLC. Donlin Gold is designed to be one of just a handful of gold mines worldwide that produce more than one million ounces of gold annually.
The Sr. Field Environmental Coordinator plays a pivotal role in leading and supporting field-based environmental initiatives to ensure full compliance with all relevant regulations, permits, and company standards. This position is responsible for providing guidance on sampling programs, environmental monitoring, inspections, and contractor oversight, all with the goal of promoting environmental stewardship and protection at the Donlin Gold Project. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise, strong problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work effectively in demanding field environments. This is a rotational field position—working two weeks on and two weeks off—based primarily at the remote Donlin Gold camp, with occasional assignments in Anchorage. Periodic travel within the Yukon-Kuskokwim region of Alaska may also be required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Regulatory Compliance
- Oversee and ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, permits, and company policies related to field operations.
- Participate in field inspections, audits, and incident investigations to support continuous environmental improvement.
- Facilitate communication between field teams, contractors, and project management regarding environmental requirements and performance.
- Provide field leadership on health, safety, and environmental best practices, including conducting toolbox talks and safety briefings as needed.
- Support the development and delivery of environmental training for field personnel and contractors.
- Environmental Monitoring
- Assist in the development and implementation of site-specific environmental monitoring programs.
- Coordinate and support environmental studies, including those conducted by contractors, consultants, or partner agencies.
- Lead the collection of water quality samples following established protocols and safety guidelines in remote field conditions.
- Prepare and maintain accurate field notes, data logs, and sampling records; ensure proper chain of custody procedures for all environmental samples.
- Assist with report preparation, data interpretation, and presentation of findings to internal and external stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant field-based environmental experience, preferably in mining or large infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience in collecting and managing water quality samples in challenging outdoor environments.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and compliance practices.
- Proven ability to coordinate and supervise environmental field studies and contractor activities.
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in data entry, analysis, and reporting; familiarity with environmental databases and GIS/EquIS is an asset.
- Willingness and ability to work in remote locations under variable weather conditions for extended periods.
- Demonstrated outdoor skills, including safe operation and travel using snow machines, all-terrain vehicles, and helicopters.
- Ability to lift and carry field equipment and work on rugged terrain.
- Current valid driver’s license; ability to pass company-required training and medical clearances.
- Commitment to fostering a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and teamwork.
