JOB SUMMARY: A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. MAJOR DUTIES: Tasks to be performed will include routing plumbing, minor electrical work, paint jobs, carpentry, preventive maintenance on air conditioning units, minor masonry, pest control, minor sheet metal work, grounds maintenance, minor equipment and tool repairs. Must apply safety procedures, rules and regulations for each task undertaken and must use safety equipment when performing his duties. Perform preventive maintenance on various pieces of park equipment by cleaning, oiling, scraping and painting. The incumbent must be able to use both hand and power tools and equipment. Follow oral and written instructions. Have knowledge of and clear understanding of safety rules and regulations, and follow the guidelines of the park's documented safety plan The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April - October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: mid-April. Area Information San Juan National Historic Site consists of a system of 400+ year Spanish fortifications and bastions that encircle the 500-year-old City of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is the smallest island of the Greater Antilles chain. The island is 35 miles wide and 100 miles long with the highest elevation at 3000 feet. Average island temperature year-round is 82-87 degrees during the day and 72- 77 degrees at night. The San Juan metropolitan area has all amenities including excellent health services and retail stores. Recreational opportunities can be found island wide. San Juan airport is located 7 miles from the park and is serviced by most major airlines with nonstop flights to major hubs. Flight time to Miami is 2.5 hours and Atlanta is 3.5 hours.
