The Rail Logistics Supervisor reports directly to the Logistics Manager or Sr. Logistics Manager. The Rail Logistics Supervisor coordinates daily scheduling of rail shipments for assigned region. The incumbent ensures compliance with company policies and established regulations: environmental health & safety; security; cost controls, and reports on rail contracts, issues and projects. The Rail Logistics Supervisor is responsible for all facets of rail logistics. The position is very fast paced and accountable for accurate entry/maintenance of all rail rates as well as timely preparation of reports. Must adhere to strict deadlines and have established ability to understand and execute on detail orientated tasks.
This position operates within somewhat flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of rail transportation operations.
Essential Functions
- Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
- Strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
- Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers and visitors.
- Relay information to or from the Regional Logistics Manager and others on team.
- Equipment & Maintenance
- Monitor equipment utilization and coordinate any required maintenance for rail repairs needed
- Operational Performance & Best Management Practices
- Process daily scheduling of railcars
- Maintain monthly demurrage report for weekly railcar availability.
- Process EDI billing and release into various railroad computer systems.
- Provide visibility of status for all railcars daily
- Maintain and track rail capacity reporting
- Maintain working relationships with railroads
- Ability to negotiate railroad rates
- Work closely with Commercial and Operations teams in regards to forecasted rail needs
- Special Projects when needed
- Inventory & Quality Control
- Gather information from operations personnel to determine actual traffic flow and assist in maintaining freight rates and regulation policies for rail shipments.
- Adheres to multi-stage compliance/control shipment tracking notification process to follow rail contracts from expected sale through receipt of final payment and closure of the contract.

Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business. Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
Interpersonal Contacts
Customers, Facilities & Operations Manager, Logistics Manager, Commercial and Sales team and Dispatchers. Communicates via face-to-face interaction, telephone, and computer.
Job Conditions
This position is occasionally exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to the equipment, machinery, and scrap as would be found throughout the scrap yard. Safety shoes, hardhats, and eye protection must be worn to eliminate the risks associated with these hazards. Frequent travel to the other yards may be required.
Handling multiple issues regarding safety and maintenance increases pressure. Work-load may be unpredictable and pressure can be substantial during peak times. Critical deadlines require considerable adaptability. Disturbances of work- flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions
Ability to: sit, stand, and or walk for up to 6-8 hours per day; occasionally negotiate around and over piles of scrap metal or equipment; crouch or bend at the knees occasionally to increase visibility; stoop or bend at the waist occasionally to increase visibility; reach at arms-length frequently or overhead occasionally; twist and turn at the neck and trunk; walk frequently on uneven ground; lift, carry, push and pull over 50 pounds occasionally. Visual acuity required for close inspection of detailed material such as reports, manuals, documents, and computer work. Hearing acuity required for daily communication with customers, drivers, and other employees. Mental dexterity needed as Rail Logistics Supervisor will be required to interact with others, work independently, and exercise attention to detail continually.
Qualifications
Graduate of a four-year degree program in Business, Transportation, or Supply Chain Management preferred. 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar role required. Familiarity with Class 1 and Short-Line railroads and scrap industry preferred. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license, as well as the ability to drive an automobile.
Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a professional manner. Working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook. Successful candidate will have previously been involved with continuous improvement initiatives with documented success. Must exhibit analytical skills to manage metrics. Ability and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations.
