Position Summary
Under the guidance of the Director of Infrastructure Architecture, Engineering and Operations, this position supports the 24x7 Global Network Operations for Plug Power and its diverse business units by meticulously planning, documenting, and executing best practices for wireless and wired network services and systems.
This is an industrial manufacturing and gas production plant network engineer position, requiring physical abilities and ability to work in very extreme temperature environments and at heights of 50-60 feet along with roof installations. OSHA lift certifications required along with CAT2 fire protection gear at plants and areas where hydrogen may be in use.
In addition, this role will support Plug’s product manufacturing with fiber runs and splicing in products, setup of telemetry and tracking systems through Wi-Fi, stabilization and improvement of cellular data communications, setup/management of security surveillance systems, and access system network support.
This position may require up to 40 percent travel.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in determining the IT needs of the company to support daily operations. Coordinating, planning, maintaining, and troubleshooting all IT-related activities so the company has the necessary infrastructure, network capability, and compute tools (software/applications) to operate efficiently and securely.
- Recommends, plans, develops, and implements network configuration changes and/or upgrades to maintain appropriate levels of service and security to user community.
- Analyzes, identifies, and resolves communication problems occurring between servers, workstations, PCs, and the Internet.
- Troubleshoot and administrates daily issues with circuits, fiber, routers, switches, VoIP, and any security vulnerabilities.
- Assists in managing the IT implementations for new business locations and acquisitions, as well as, upgrades/improvements/patching to existing infrastructure.
- Develops and monitors Local Area and Wide Area Network (LAN and WAN) performance and utilization statistics and prepares periodic reports for management summarizing network status.
- Works on impactful, prioritized projects to meet organizational needs/directives.
- Communicates and coordinates with outside vendors in support of email, internet, and service needs.
- Maintains documentation on site layouts, system flows, processes, policies, and procedures.
- Exercises entrepreneurial spirit and can-do attitude to assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of daily operations of the global network and connectivity needs of the organization.
- Maintains a 100% accurate inventory of IP addresses, configurations, and network topology diagrams.
- Documents procedures for troubleshooting and data collection for resolution for level 1 EUS services.
- Trains Network Operations Center (NOC) staff on network monitoring systems and alert response coordination to documented procedures.
- Administers SolarWinds Orion to ensure all nodes are included and an alerting set for monitoring and all sites are properly placed on Geographical alerting MAPS for Operations Center visibility.
- Duties may include the purchase, configuration, placement of all physical Infrastructure platforms/assets requiring physical equipment.
Education and Experience
- A minimum of 10 years IT professional experience with a global network required.
- 5 years of field network deployment experience in harsh weather conditions.
- Ability to lift to 100 pounds and remain standing for multiple hours per day.
- Understanding of TCP/IP, and PC networking, routing protocols including an engineering level capability and deep knowledge of network communication concepts as they relate to network topology and support.
- Ability to create and maintain diagrammatic representations of network configurations using Visio or other graphical topology tools.
- Experience leading and managing IT projects and supporting existing networks and infrastructure.
- Strong critical thinking/critical thinking skills required.
- Project Management skills and the ability to prioritize with and without direct input or supervision.
- Ability to work independently, be resourceful, and communicate effectively in a decentralized environment.
- Advanced knowledge of SOPHOS Firewall, Extreme Routers, Wireless Access Points and Switches, Cisco ISR, Aruba Networking gear, Big Leaf Extreme, EMC, and ESXi networking-based solutions.
- Experience with supporting facilities and security for IP Telephony, IP Camera Surveillance and Building Badge networking and security.
