Job Description and Duties
Position(s) exists in Alameda County. Under the general direction of the Region Manager I, the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent is responsible for the supervision of Caltrans Maintenance Supervisors who oversee Landscape and Maintenance crews. The incumbent will be responsible to ensure the proper maintenance of the highway travel way, roadside and landscaped areas of the East Bay/Delta Region in a safe and efficient manner. The incumbent will also be a Contract Manager for the development, administration, and oversight of Service Contracts, Minor B Contracts, and other types of contracts necessary for the repair and maintenance of the Region's inventory and facilities. The incumbent will be required to operate vehicles requiring a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Incumbent’s work hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. To help the Department with scheduling, incumbent may be asked to work alternate work shifts such as but not limited to 9/80, 4/10, work nights or weekends. May be required to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and be available to respond after hours to emergency calls, hazardous material spills, storms, or special projects.
Incumbent when performing office duties will work in a secured, climate controlled office building under artificial lighting, with appropriate parking space. Incumbent will be exposed to computers and may stand or sit for prolonged periods; must be able to work at a keyboard and focus on complex tasks for long periods of time and must be able to organize and prioritize large volumes of work and documents. Incumbent may be occasionally required to travel in state for training purposes.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: Breadth of experience in varied maintenance activities, such as road, special crews, and landscape maintenance in rural and metropolitan locations; technical training in construction, maintenance, or chemical application fields. Class A or B driver license; and familiarity with office automation equipment and computer systems.
