JOB SUMMARY: This position is a Wildlife Biologist (Avian), GS- 0486-9 working in Anchorage, AK for the R7-Division of Migratory Birds. This is a term position expected to last 13 months but may be extended up to a total of 4 years at management's discretion. MAJOR DUTIES: As a Wildlife Biologist (Avian) your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Plans and executes aerial and ground-based migratory bird surveys to determine distribution, population abundance and trends, patterns in reproductive success, timing of nesting events, adult and natal fidelity, and other demographic parameters of select species of land birds, seabirds, shorebirds, raptors and waterfowl. Analyzes survey, monitoring and assessment data; writes reports and peer reviewed publications; presents information at public outreach, and professional meetings and symposia. Helps train and supervise permanent biologists, seasonal biological technicians, and volunteers on aerial and ground migratory bird surveys, monitoring, and assessment techniques, methods, and protocols. Collaborates and provides support to state agencies including the Alaska Department of Fish and Game; other federal agencies including the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Bureau of Ocean Energy and Management, US Geological Survey, and the National Marine Fisheries Service; Universities, research institutions, and Native organizations. Reviews and follows all appropriate natural resource state and federal laws, regulations, and international treaties and agreements, completes required Institutional Animal Care and Use protocols and annual report; obtains necessary state and federal permits for scientific collection or potential take of threatened and endangered species.
