About
I bring a strong interdisciplinary background in GIS field data collection, applied meteorology, and ecology, supported by over a decade of hands-on experience with the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service in remote and operational field environments.
While serving as a Program Lead with the USDA Forest Service on the Tongass National Forest, I conducted trail reconnaissance assessments incorporating slope analysis, hydrology, vegetation, and terrain evaluation, using GPS, maps, and compass navigation. My field observations supported recreation and engineering staff by informing geospatial datasets and project planning. I routinely performed weather assessments impacting aviation, boating, and ground operations, adjusting field activities in response to microclimate conditions and forecasted hazards. These efforts resulted in zero safety incidents across multiple remote projects while improving environmental protection practices.
My experience as a Park Guide and Volunteer Interpretive Ranger across multiple NPS units—including Bighorn Canyon NRA, Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and Assateague Island National Seashore—strengthened my applied knowledge of geospatial interpretation, meteorology, and ecosystem dynamics. I regularly used topographic maps, satellite imagery, and field observations to interpret landforms, hydrology, erosion, and landscape change. I monitored and communicated severe weather risks, explained atmospheric processes influencing erosion and coastal systems, and delivered detailed ecology programs covering prairie, forest, canyon, and coastal environments.
In addition to my field and interpretive experience, I bring strong scientific communication skills, developed through the delivery of educational programs to diverse audiences, including researchers, school groups, and the general public. I am experienced in translating complex topics—such as climate processes, geomorphology, and ecological interactions—into clear, actionable information that supports public safety, resource protection, and informed decision-making.
I am Public-Trust eligible, available for immediate full-time employment, and trained in chainsaw safety, aviation and boat safety, cold-water and backcountry survival, Leave No Trace principles, and wilderness operations. I am confident my combined GIS-oriented field skills, meteorological awareness, ecological knowledge, and commitment to safe operations would allow me to contribute effectively to your team.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I welcome the opportunity to further discuss how my experience aligns with the needs of your organization and this position.
Respectfully,
Don L. Leonard Jr.
