Environmental Health & Safety Internship

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Museum of Science Facilities Department manages the daily and long-range operations of the Museum's Facilities to provide a safe, clean, and pleasant work environment on an economical and timely basis. Operations include electrical and mechanical building systems, and building/structure components. Responsible for overseeing all construction and renovations, permits, licenses, and compliance with governmental regulatory requirements pertaining to the operation of the building.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Intern will assist the Environmental, Health & Safety Program Manager with implementing the Museum's safety & health program and routine safety & health activities such as documenting job hazard analyses and lockout/tagout procedures; personal protective equipment (PPE) selection; chemical inventory and updating of safety data sheets; safety & health inspections; and training.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Complete and document job hazard analyses/PPE identification
Document lockout/tagout procedures
Update safety data sheets, chemical inventory and chemical labels
Conduct PPE and safety equipment inspections
Assist with monthly safety & health trainings
Attend Safety Committee meetings

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Current actively enrolled in an undergraduate or advance degree program, a recent graduation (within 1 year), or career changer
Pursing or completion of a degree in Occupational/Environmental Safety & Health or a related field
Experience or classroom work in job hazard analysis, PPE selection and lockout/tagout
Familiarity with OSHA's revised Hazard Communication standard
Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated planning and organizational skills
Working knowledge of Excel/Word/PowerPoint
Ability to work on a team and independently

SPECIAL SKILLS: (Preferred skills and/or experiences, but not required for the position)

Experience with providing training
Experience with conducting safety & health inspections
Experience with working in databases

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: Winter/Spring 2023 (January/February - May/June)

LOCATION: Hybrid model, when onsite, 1 Science Park Boston, MA

WORK SCHEDULE: Hyrbid model (onsite and remote). Choice of 2 or 3 days a week (14 or 21 working hours respectively); days must be consistent on a weekly basis. Selection of days are within Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM

All internships are part-time, temporary positions.

PAY RATE: The pay rate for internships is $15.00 per hour for an undergrad or $15.25 per hour for a graduate or an advanced degree student.

VACCINATION POLICY:

Staff, interns, and volunteers will be required to show proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. The Museum will consider an exemption from the vaccine requirement if they are unable to get vaccinated due to a qualifying medical disability or a sincerely held religious objection. The Museum is not required to provide an accommodation or exemption from the vaccine requirement if doing so would pose a direct threat to others in the workplace or would create an undue hardship for the Museum.
