Job Description and Duties
Under the supervision of a Caltrans Electrical Supervisor or guidance from a Caltrans Electrician II, the Caltrans Electrician I is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of the most complex electrical and electronically controlled devices on facilities and right of way. Installs, maintains and repairs all Highway Electrical inventory. Works independently and/or with others and operates highway maintenance equipment and vehicles. With training and certification where necessary, incumbent may be required to operate equipment such as trenchers, forklifts, air quality monitors, hoists and cranes. Works at elevated heights and in confined spaces. Incumbent will be required to do heavy manual labor such as but not limited to: moving heavy items, lifting, carrying, digging, and shoveling. Overtime work, also irregular shifts/alternate work schedules including nights, holidays and weekends; may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts and required to respond to emergency situations and calls. May be loaned to other cost centers. This position is represented under collective bargaining.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Electrician I exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Position located in South Bay Electrical Specialty Region, Santa Clara County. The Caltrans Electrician I may work under various climates and conditions. Work may be performed inside of climate controlled buildings, but most operations will take place alongside, over or upon State highways and right of way. The incumbent will be exposed to noise, inclement weather, dirt, odors, uneven surfaces, heights up to 550 ft above pavement or water, confined spaces, concrete products, cleaning solvents, high speed traffic conditions and moving construction equipment. Must be willing to work odd hours, weekends and be available for trouble calls outs.
