The role of the Real Time Energy Trader is performed in teams of 3 while working on a 12-hour rotating shift basis. This includes nights, weekends and holidays as the energy market is always operating and in need of operational support. A Real Time Trader negotiates wholesale sales and purchases of physical energy in the hourly markets, coordinates generation operations with dispatch personnel, procures transmission reservations, schedules energy flow by issuing digital E-tags. Traders are responsible to record deals in a timely manner, maintain a physical position through trading software, communicate with forecasting and reliability dispatch as well as maintain a general level of awareness around the company’s generation assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Negotiate transactions to financially optimize corporate assets including wind, solar, biomass and thermal generation.
- Capture locational pricing spreads by utilizing transmission to link markets across various interconnects.
- Manage day-ahead positions as they flow into the hourly market.
- Provide market pricing and trends to adjacent groups in the organization.
- Create NERC E-tags, purchase transmission via OASIS and capture transactions accurately in Avangrid's energy management system.
- Represent yourself and the organization as a whole in a professional manner at all times.
- Facilitate training while working on shift and collaborate with teammates in the process.
- Find effective ways to execute your obligations while working over nights, weekends and holidays.
- Provide generation and transmission schedules to ISO’s, control areas and transmission providers.
- Manage unit bids/offers in the Northeastern and Midwestern ISO's to optimize the portfolio.
- Trade physical power across the eastern US to maximize profitability.
- Execute contractual obligations to deliver REC’s to various counterparties.

Skills and Requirements
- BA/BS degree in mathematics, business, finance, economics, or engineering or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Solid understanding of commodity pricing and delivery patterns.
- Ability to self-motivate and create opportunities.
- PC proficiency and experience with automated tools that support trading activity.
- Understanding of how the physical electrical grid works in the United States.
- Ability to independently function in fast paced deadline dependent environment. Must be performance driven, self-motivated and proactive with demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to thrive while working 12-hour shifts that rotate around days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to model intra-day and next day pricing and load to devise strategies.
