Position Summary
The Youth Environmental Education Specialist works within the North Carolina Botanical Garden ( NCBG ) Learning & Community Engagement department as part of the Youth Education Program team under the supervision of the Youth Education Program Manager. This position develops, teaches, and evaluates audience-driven environmental education programs for youth of all ages, from preschool to high school, that align with the strategic objectives of the Garden’s youth education program. Engaging, developmentally appropriate, and scientifically accurate programs are delivered independently and in collaboration with other program staff. Types of programs include but are not limited to summer and teacher workday camps, school field trips, early childhood classes, family and drop-in programs, self-guided activities, and special events. The position creates teaching materials and resources to support programming and aids in program administrative duties. Additionally, the position supports the development and maintenance of indoor and outdoor program spaces and related educational/interpretive resources and exhibits, and assists with training and supervision of temporary staff and volunteers. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Must be available at least one weekend per month based on program needs.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Possess a commitment to the mission of the North Carolina Botanical Garden Demonstrated ability to develop, teach, and evaluate engaging, developmentally appropriate, and scientifically accurate environmental education programs for youth (preschool through high school) in an outdoor nonformal setting, i.e. botanic garden, park, zoo, aquarium, or museum Strong knowledge of local flora and fauna and natural ecosystems Working knowledge of environmental education and interpretive best practices Experience in creating educational/interpretive materials and displays Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to be patient and kind and work productively and harmoniously with people of all ages and backgrounds. Adaptable, highly motivated, creative, and have good judgment Detail oriented with strong time and task management skills Demonstrated success working both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team Proficient with MS Office with ability to learn new platforms A valid NC driver’s license and eligibility to drive a state vehicle is required CPR with AED and First Aid certification (provided upon employment) *Must be able to work flexible hours including occasional weekends (1-2 per month)
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Experience developing and leading environmental education programs for early childhood (ages 4-7) Familiarity with NC Standard Course of Study and experience developing curriculum-aligned programs Experience leading nature-themed camp programs Experience training and supervising volunteers Familiarity and/or experience with children’s gardens and/or nature play spaces Possess NC Environmental Education Certification or similar certifications
