CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICE
Michael Baker International’s civil engineering professionals manage and staff active projects in over 40 countries on five continents. Services are provided for a broad range of projects and capabilities, including highways, airports, bridges, rail and transit systems, government and commercial facilities, water and wastewater infrastructure, oil and gas infrastructure, and commercial/urban development. Our fields of expertise span all areas of civil engineering and include an extensive variety of specialty disciplines, such as environmental compliance and restoration, coastal engineering, urban development, and mining.
Michael Baker’s Civil and Environmental Practice seeks an Environmental Associate (EA) to join our growing team based out of our Virginia Beach, Virginia office (with remote/hybrid option to report to the Michael Baker office in Charlotte, North Carolina). The EA will work closely with Michael Baker’s engineers and environmental scientists supporting the executing and documenting of environmental compliance projects. The focus of these projects includes industrial and municipal compliance with federal and state regulations for wastewater, stormwater/SWPPP, SPCC, air quality and emissions inventories, EPCRA, as well as other regulatory requirements. Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent communication, writing, presentation, interpersonal, attention to detail, and time management skills.
The candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary, collaborative engineering team with staff located in the Virginia Beach office as well as other Michael Baker offices across the country.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate would assist with day-to-day tasks/projects under the direction of project managers and senior staff members and work effectively with project teams, clients, and other stakeholders. The candidate should be capable of working in an office and field environment, as needed.
Typical tasks may include, but not be limited to:
· Preparing compliance reports for environmental regulatory programs applicable to industrial and commercial facilities, including Clean Water Act (CWA) NPDES, Clean Air Act (CAA), EPRCA TRI and Tier II.
· Assist in preparing environmental compliance plans and permitting documents for NPDES wastewater discharges, NPDES stormwater discharges, and SPCC compliance.
· Conducting field work in support of environmental compliance, including measurements and observations, for various industrial, municipal and commercial project types and sizes.
· Providing accurate documentation of field tasks performed in accordance with established procedures and preparing field sketches and site maps.
· Collecting and compiling quantitative and qualitative data to prepare reports, maps, and related graphics as a member of the project team.
· Conducting audits, field evaluations and assessments, to assess environmental and/or compliance conditions.
· Researching regulations and standards, developing reports, technical and QA/QC reviews, and final deliverable submittals.
· Communicating and interacting with other staff and subcontractors.
· Managing personal workload and coordinating schedule with supervising manager and department manager as appropriate.
· Under the supervision of a senior staff member, interacting with clients regarding project issues such as interviewing for site assessments or obtaining data for reports.
· Working simultaneously on multiple tasks of varying size and complexity.
· Other duties as assigned by supervising manager and/or department manager.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· A 4-year or advanced degree in biology, environmental science, or a related engineering field.
· Ability to obtain professional licensure in the future a plus.
· 2-4 years of related experience preferred and experience working with supporting industrial clients with environmental compliance is a plus.
· Proficient critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Earth, Adobe, or Bluebeam.
· Must have a valid Driver’s License or ability to secure.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical duties for field work activities include the ability to:
· Accommodate moderate travel to project sites will be required at various times of the year.
· Walk over uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
· Work in remote access, commercial/industrial, and construction environments.
· Wear specific PPE including hard hat, hearing, and eye protection.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour training
· Working knowledge of environmental research, investigation, and assessment principles, analysis methodologies, and environmental regulatory guidelines.
· Knowledge of the following regulations and regulatory programs relating to industrial facilities: CWA (Wastewater & Stormwater), SPCC, CAA, and EPCRA (Tier II) Reporting.
· Direct work experience with surface water/wastewater/stormwater field measurements and sample collection.
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $64,470 - $101,554. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
