OverviewThe Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) serves a highly visible system leader, responsible for oversight, direction, and evaluation of EHS programs within Riverside Health System. Responsibilities include oversight of establishing regulatory standards for System level policies and programs, providing technical regulatory expertise, and development of training, competency, and compliance programs. The Director is responsible for leading, and sustaining effective EHS management programs throughout the Health System and ensuring organizational operations are in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ), Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD), and other Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as requirements of accrediting bodies.
What you will do- Serve as the subject matter expert and system resource for associated regulatory requirements and lead the effort to develop and implement Environmental Health and Safety strategies and programs that align with the organizational goals. Partner with Employee Health, Infection Prevention, and Human Resource leadership in program development and administration to comply with OSHA/VOSH, EPA, VDEQ and other Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as requirements of accrediting bodies.
- Effectively collaborate with divisional and operational leaders to develop strategies and implement programs that proactively sustain compliance and provides services and assistance to RHS site locations to mitigate incident and compliance risks. Maintain active involvement in RHS operations to protect the safety and health or patients, team members, contractors, vendors, and visitors.
- Direct and oversee the administration of EHS programs throughout Riverside’s operations. Lead a team of subject matter specialists to provide EHS services to other teams and functions. Responsible for leading efforts for related compliance initiatives.
- Develop and implement effective and ongoing education for Riverside leaders and team members to increase and sustain environmental health and safety performance, competencies, and compliance.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and consultancy to system, acute care, medical group, post-acute and long-term care safety committees to promote compliance with policies, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Monitor federal and state agency regulations, proposed rules, public notices, executive orders for impact to RHS. Provide recommendations to leaders on impacts and necessary actions for operational compliance. Serves as point of contact for the system to regulatory agencies and other governmental or public entities.
- May be required to participate in staffing to meet patient care needs
QualificationsEducation- Bachelors Degree, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or Related Field (Required)
Experience- 5-6 years Environmental Health and/or Safety program administration (Required)
- 5-6 years Management / Supervisory experience (Required)
- 5-6 years Recent relevant experience in health care safety and/or environmental program administration (Preferred)
Skills and Abilities- Strong knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to environmental health and safety
- Ability to interpret and/or apply regulatory requirements to organizational operations and translate regulatory regulations, permit, and plan requirements into understandable compliance guidance and solutions
- Knowledge of principles and methods for education and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects
- Demonstrated organizational, time management and leadership skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience
- Ability to successfully perform in a matrixed, multi-site environment
- Ability to work independently and be self-directed
Licenses and Certifications- Certified Life Safety Specialist for Health Care Facility Managers (CLSS-HC) - National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) , Associate Safety Professional (ASP) OR Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) within 2 Years(Required)
- Certified Healthcare Operations Professional - DNV (A or B level certification) within 2 Years(Required)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) - Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) (Preferred)
- Drives personal vehicle for RHS business 25% or more of the time to perform essential functions of the job
- Operates company vehicles as essential function of the job
- Valid Drivers License Required
