DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental & Economic Project Coordinator.
This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The Economic and Environmental Coordinator, under the general direction of the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs & Economic Development, helps DEQ organization live its core values by assisting the Director in providing highly and complex professional, administrative, analytical, and operational support to the Director, Secretary’s Office, and Division Directors. The Economic & Environmental Coordinator operates in a constantly evolving environment, completing high-level tasks that directly impacts operations throughout the agency. Work involves collaboration with key internal decision-makers and subject matter experts and vital external stakeholders to meet deadlines and project deliverables.
The Economic & Environmental Coordinator routinely meets with DEQ staff and external stakeholders while assisting with the management of various projects. This position will represent the Director at internal and external meetings as required.
This position operates in a constantly evolving environment and completes a variety of high-level tasks that directly impact Department operations, requiring collaboration across diverse internal and external stakeholders, and will be sensitive and confidential in nature.
Key Responsibilities: - Plan, coordinate, and conduct multiple complex and sensitive projects across divisions, state government, and with local government partners.
- Assist the Director or others in leading and/or coordinating diverse workgroups on subjects or projects that result in providing a recommendation for action, such as a policy change, a new program implementation, or the development of a new process.
- Assist in the implementation of programs, processes, policies and/or procedures to successfully achieve objectives of the Department.
- Assist in the selections and application of appropriate research techniques to collect, analyze, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data from various sources on a variety of specialized sources to support informed decision-making and policy direction.
- Ensure projects, action items, and other work are completed on time, achieve established objectives, and are of desired quality by keeping the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs and Economic Development and other Senior Leaders updated on work progress and concerns.
- Facilitate co-created resolutions to difficult issues that impede progress on and quality of assigned projects.
- Attend occasional off-site meetings, keep track of environmental and economic project needs, and oversee the follow-up and execution of those projects in an efficient and effective manner.
- Establish and manage a system for tracking and reporting statuses of projects, pending items, Administrative or Legislative rquest, and inquiries and service requests, as well as the impacts of completed work on the Department.
- Respond to inquiries and service requests from Commissioners, residents, and other stakeholders, including the identification of staff or other parties capable of assisting with specific inquiries and the delegation of follow-up tasks as necessary. Work to resolve issues and complaints that rise to the County Manager’s Office.
- Under the Supervision of the Director, develop and present memos, reports, and presentations to the Director, Senor Leadership Team, internal and external stakeholders.
- Represent the Department on committees and task forces and at interagency and community events and meetings, as needed.
- Performs other duties as required.

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution; and five (5) years of progressively responsible program experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
