Description of Work
Department: The Public Staff - North Carolina Utilites Commission
Division: Energy
Job Duties: To develop, integrate, automate and then validate a process to transfer extensive amounts of data from one software platform to another and then generate a graphical (i.e. dashboard) interface.
Major Task to be Performed: Develop a methodology to interface with output files of an optimization software to Microsoft BI. At the direction of senior level engineers and analysts, develop a graphical interface to simplify data analytics. Automate updates to the graphical interface while enable scalability and optionality in the graphical interface. Develop and implement a validation and verification process to ensure data integrity in the automation process.
Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: The final product will be a usable graphical interface that automatically updates optimization outcomes in an end user format. The final product will need to have quality control/assurance developed and tested to ensure data integrity. The results will be used by subject matter experts for implementation of state policy for the State of North Carolina’s carbon reduction requirements, outlined in G.S. 62-110.9.
Academic Majors Desired: Data Analytics, Data Management, Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering.
2025 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday, May 19 – Friday, July 25, 2025
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Microsoft Office Suite, notably Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Power BI or equivalent (e.g. Tableau, Sisense) Python, C++, Ability to work in a team setting, complete tasks and projects in a timely manner, be flexible to design changes based on team feedback.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.
- Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2025.
- Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
- To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.
- Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
